Dad to serve 10 years for abusing 4-month-old daughter (Montville, Connecticut)

Another case we've reported on recently. Dad JEFFREY MEARS has now been sentenced to 10 years in prison for inflicing severe injuries on his 4-month-old daughter. This one of those guys I now refer to has a DDD (Deadbeat Druggie Daddy). Notice that Mom was arrested even though she was working when Daddy assaulted the baby, and that CPS took custody. If you want to hold moms responsible, then maybe we need to let them get rid of DDDs without the risk of further violence to themselves or their children and/or a "custody dispute."

A Montville father was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday for inflicting severe injuries on his 4-month-old daughter.

Jeffrey Mears, 30, had been watching the baby while the mother, Jaime Carr, was at work. Carr took the child to the pediatrician, where doctors noticed she had multiple bruises and a broken left arm. A follow-up exam at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center showed that she had injuries "consistent with multiple episodes of inflicted injury," including a healing fracture of the clavicle, healing fractures in both arms, multiple healing and fractured ribs, healing fractures to both legs and a probable skull fracture. State police arrested both parents and the state Department of Children and Families took the child into custody.

Mears has an extensive criminal record and was himself a victim of child abuse, according to court documents and testimony.

Interviewed during the investigation, Mears denied hurting the baby intentionally but told police that his judgment was clouded by the marijuana and alcohol he uses constantly. He said he had fallen with her in his arms once. He told state police he was "generally rough" with her, that he "bobbles her around a lot."

In December, he pleaded no contest to first-degree assault. Carr's case is pending, and her next court date is March 25. Mears will be on probation for five years following his release from prison.
