Bond denied for dad charged in murder of 2-month-old daughter (Augusta, Georgia)

Dad JACQUES BUTLER has been denied bail in the death of his 2-month-old daughter. That's somewhat unusual in these cases. Usually batterers and child abusers are out of jail immediately, though they have a very bad track record in terms of witness intimidation and the like. Kudos to Judge Bernard J. Mulherin Sr.

An Augusta man was denied bond Friday during a hearing on charges that he caused his 2-month-old daughter's death by shaking her.

Senior Judge Bernard J. Mulherin Sr. denied bond to Jacques Butler, 21, calling him a risk to intimidate witnesses in the case.

Authorities say Butler held Zion Harris by her hips above his head Jan. 26 and shook her up and down repeatedly to stop her from crying, then threw the baby to her mother.

The child was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital to treat injuries that caused bleeding in her brain and severe cranial pressure, said Assistant District Attorney Sam Nicholson. She died in the hospital two days later.

Butler has been charged with murder and cruelty to children.
