A Jersey City man has been charged with assaulting his 2-month-old son by authorities who accuse him of breaking the boy's leg and ribs, officials said yesterday.
"Any reasonable person would not handle a 2-month-old like this defendant, who admitted to our detectives that he had," Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor John Mulkeen said of the charges against Philander Carter, 18, of Winfield Avenue.
Carter is charged with child abuse, endangering the welfare of a child, and aggravated assault on the baby, who is identified in court papers as X.C.
Carter made his first appearance on the charges in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City Monday. He was released after posting a bail of $75,000 cash or bond, Mulkeen said.
According to the complaint, Carter assaulted the baby by "purposefully holding X.C. by the arm and leg and shaking him, causing a tibia and multiple fractured ribs."
The incident occurred sometime last month and it came to the attention of authorities after the baby's mother took him to Bayonne Medical Center, officials said.
"He made admissions regarding his rough handling of the child, including that he had squeezed the child too hard," Mulkeen said.
The matter is being investigated further and prosecutors are reading all medical reports on the victim and will also get a report from a child abuse expert, Mulkeen said.
