Dad in jail for abandoning 3-month-old daughter at bakery (Weslaco, Texas)

UNNAMED DAD has been jailed for abandoning his 3-month-old daughter at a bakery. Child Protective Services (CPS) has taken "temporary" custody of the child, and the child will stay in foster care during the investigation. Not a word here on the mother, but that's typical.

WESLACO - A father is in jail accused of abandoning his 3-month-old daughter at a downtown Weslaco bakery.

Witnesses tell CHANNEL 5 NEWS the father entered Marines Bakery near Texas and Business 83 around 1PM Wednesday to shop and then disappeared. They say the little girl was left alone inside the store for at least 15 minutes. The customers in the bakery were stunned; they called cops.

"We saw her. She was asleep. She was well taken care of. She was clean and everything. She was okay," a customer named Irene said.

Employees called bakery owner Mike Marines back to the store. He says, "I feel bad for the guy, but you just can't do that - not with a baby." He describes the dad as a regular customer.

When officers arrived, the girl's father also returned.

CHANNEL 5 NEWS was the only station on the scene as police arrested him. He's expected to be charged Thursday with child endangerment. Police won't release his name.

Weslaco Police spokesperson David Molina says Child Protective Services has taken temporary custody of the child. The baby will stay in foster care while authorities investigate.
