A father has been arrested on suspicion of stabbing his four-year-old son to death before turning the knife on himself.

Forensic investigators cover up the outside of the flat.

The 31-year-old man remains under guard in hospital after undergoing surgery for stab wounds to his neck and body.

Neighbours dialled 999 after hearing a furious row at a flat in Southwark, south east London, at about 6pm on Monday.

Police officers arrived at the Lynton Estate low-rise block to find the body of the four-year-old boy. He had been stabbed.

The man's 28-year-old wife was taken to hospital suffering a stab wound to the neck.

She has since been discharged. A 17-month-old girl was found unharmed.

Investigators believe the man, who has not been named, attacked his wife after she said she wanted a divorce.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the 31-year-old man is in a "serious" condition.

"Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a four-year-old boy in Southwark.

"We know the identity of the dead child but not all next of kin have been notified at this stage.
"The man remains in a south London hospital. His condition is believed to be stable."

Southwark is today the scene of another hideous crime, a four old has been found dead with murder detectives waiting to question the father on suspicion of stabbing the child to death.

The Met was called into a flat in Southwark on Monday following an argument, the police found a body with knife wounds.

The BBC reported that the "31-year-old father is under guard at a south London hospital. His 28-year-old wife suffered a stab wound to the neck but has been discharged."

A 17-month-old girl was found unharmed at the address in Lynton Road at about 1800 GMT.

The death is being investigated by officers led by Detective Inspector Keith Braithwaite, based at Stratford, east London.

"There have been no arrests and they are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident."
