A man allegedly auctioned off his 6-year-old daughter for $21 on Wednesday in a desperate attempt to buy liquor in India.

According to the Times of India, Krishnaiah, 40, a daily wage laborer living in Kadapa in the south-central state of Andhra Pradesh, went to the liquor store to buy a drink.

The store owner refused to sell the man any alcohol because he owed the store money. So the father took his daughter and put her up for sale. He started the bid at $6.

The girl eventually was sold, but cops soon found out about the horrifying auction. They found the man, beat him up and arrested him, according to the paper.

The man who bought the girl fled the scene, abandoning the girl on the street.
