RACINE- A newborn baby's legs were broken in a serious case of child abuse.
The infant's mother didn't want to appear on camera, but she told TODAY'S TMJ4 her one-month-old is doing a lot better but still in the hospital.
Shavontae Daniels is accused of doing an unthinkable crime to his daughter Sharay -- breaking her legs.
The criminal charge came a surprise to some who know him.
Ernest Munday had no concerns about letting Daniels interact with his own daughter at times. "I don't know what triggered him or nothing like that it was an easy going fella to me," said Munday to TODAY'S TMJ4. "Well, he seemed like he was a nice fellow - like he was so happy you know."
But the criminal complaint against Daniels tells a different story.
The infant was in Daniels' care when the incident happened. Her mother was away but saw something wrong with Sharay's legs when she returned and called 9-1-1.
Doctors say the infant also has a possible skull fracture -- injuries that show significant violent force.
Daniels told police he was carrying Sharay and fell on her. He admitted to the injuries and said he should have gotten her help sooner -- and that he is sorry.
Munday doesn't think he'll see Daniels anytime soon, telling TODAY'S TMJ4 he doesn't want his kid around someone accused of such a crime.
Daniels will be back in court next week
If convicted, he could get up to 40 years in prison.
