NC father charged in death of 4-year-old son

CANTON, N.C. -- A 24-year-old North Carolina man is charged with second-degree murder in his son's death.

The Citizen-Times of Asheville reports Saturday that 4-year-old Jake Russell was pronounced dead at an Asheville hospital Thursday night. Haywood County Sheriff Bobby Suttles says emergency workers found the boy unresponsive when they arrived at his home between Canton and the Bethel community.

His father, Michael Swayngim, was initially charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, then released on bond.

Suttles says he was arrested again and charged with felony child abuse and second-degree murder.

Suttles declined to discuss the boy's injuries.

Swayngim was being held in the Haywood County jail on bonds totaling $290,000. It was unclear if he had a lawyer.
