Jersey City family buries baby as dad waits to face judge on murder charge, mom recovering

JERSEY CITY — A few dozen people attended a somber funeral Mass yesterday for a 3-month-old Jersey City boy police say was pushed out a third-floor window by his father while in his mother’s arms.

Damien Bruno’s tiny white casket rested on a table before an altar adorned with white flowers during the Mass at St. Bridget’s Church on Montgomery Street.

“We have been waiting for the arrival of this baby and to have him taken away like this is just unbelievable,” Damien’s grandmother said on the church steps after the service, which was celebrated in Spanish. “I feel just terrible about what happened.”

The baby’s father, Frederico Bruno, 19, has been charged with multiple counts in connection with the July 27 attack in his former Rutgers Avenue apartment that also left his former 20-year-old girlfriend and her 21-year-old female friend stabbed and in critical condition.

Bruno is charged with the attempted murder of both women, and following Damien’s death on Tuesday, he was charged with felony murder. He was to make his first court appearance on the homicide charge yesterday, but the paperwork was not yet complete and the hearing was rescheduled for today.

Bruno faces 30 years to life in prison if convicted on the felony murder count alone.

Following yesterday’s 10 a.m. Mass, family members and friends made their way to Holy Cross Cemetery in North Arlington to bury Damien, who suffered multiple blunt force injuries in the fall.

Authorities say that on the day of the attack Bruno let himself into the apartment he once shared with Damien and his ex-girlfriend, and was hiding when the ex-girlfriend, their baby, and her friend arrived at 6:30 a.m.

Police say Bruno stabbed the friend in the face and body with a kitchen knife and meat cleaver before attacking the mother of his child, police said. The mother was stabbed multiple times in the back of the neck and police say she may have been shielding Damien from harm.

Bruno then shoved the mother and child with such force that an air conditioner unit, the woman and the baby plummeted from a third-floor window, police said.

Bruno then descended the fire escape into the backyard and beat the woman with a piece of furniture, police said.

The young mother remains hospitalized but is now in stable condition. Police have spoken to her but have not yet conducted a formal interview due to her injuries and medications, officials said. Her friend was released from the hospital a few days after the attack.

Bruno is expected to appear in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City today at 1 p.m. via video link from Hudson County jail in Kearny.
