A Gainesville father was arrested on a charge of felony child abuse Wednesday after police said the 6-foot-5, 300-pound man beat his 7-year-old daughter for losing the nose guard on her eyeglasses.
Joshua Allen, 35, was arrested after the child’s mother and aunt brought her to the pediatrician’s office for a scheduled visit, according to a Gainesville Police report.
During an examination, the aunt noticed extensive bruising to the girl’s buttocks and lower back area, and notified authorities, the report said.
The report said a Child Protection Team was called in, and they said the bruising came from “high velocity strikes.”
“The extent of her bruising, initial pain and persistent tenderness on palpation,” the report said, “reflects significant force that was applied to cause these injuries. There is concern for underlying muscle damage.”
After he was arrested, Allen said he hit his daughter with his bare hand twice on top of a bath towel for lying about how she lost the nose guard on her eyeglasses, police said.
His account was inconsistent with the victim’s injuries, police added.
The report noted the girl is 4 feet tall and weighs 74 pounds and police said that, given “the obvious difference in their size’’ and the amount of force used by Allen, “it should reasonably be expected that his intentional repeated strikes to the victim could result in physical injury.’’
Allen was in Alachua County jail on Thursday afternoon with a $10,000 bond.
