Dad charged with using infant as shielf in domestic violence arrest (Reno, Nevada)

Note that once again, dad MICHAEL H. KELLY is identified as just a "man" in the headline, when he was actually the father of the infant "allegedly" used as a shield against the police. Seems the police were there to investigate after a daughter called 911. Charming daddy apparently tried to strangle the mother of his children, and in front of them to boot.

Reno police: Man allegedly used infant as shield in domestic violence arrest

A 911 call Tuesday night from a child resulted in Reno police arresting her father on charges he tried to strangle his wife, and then allegedly used his infant to shield police from breaking down his door to check the family’s welfare.

Michael H. Kelly, 42, was arrested after Reno police said he twice held his infant son in his arms while he pushed against doors to prevent officers from coming inside.

Ultimately the baby was not injured, and Kelly’s wife was hospitalized for injuries she received after he allegedly tried to strangle her in the presence of their children.

Kelly was booked into the Washoe County Jail on suspicion of strangulation, domestic violence, child endangerment, false imprisonment, resisting arrest and preventing a victim from reporting a crime. He remained jailed Wednesday in lieu of more than $30,500 bail.

The incident occurred just after 10 a.m. in the 500 block of Colorado River Boulevard.

A girl called 911 saying her parents were fighting and it had gotten out of hand, according to a police report. When officers spoke to Kelly through his front door he refused to let them inside to check the welfare of his family.

Officers saw his wife through the window who mouthed “Help me please,” the report said. Kelly then took his baby and held him in his arms as he pushed against the door to prevent the officers from coming inside. The officers were able to kick open the door once Kelly left his position to address an officer who was at the back of his home.

But then Kelly ran into a back bedroom with his son and continued pushing against that door, the report said. Officers were able to safely kick that door down and placed him under arrest.
