Violent dad takes family court judge as hostage because he's mad about child custody (Finney County, Kansas)

How much do you want to bet that the ex-wife/partner of JASON NICHOLS was terrorized for years with similar abuse tactics?

And how much do you want to bet that there is fathers rights movement involvement in this somewhere? These guys are often egging each other on to pull off these stunts.

Police in western Kansas say a gunman who held Finney County's chief judge and his wife hostage over a child custody matter eventually surrendered and the two were released unharmed.

Authorities say the standoff began shortly before 7am Tuesday, when the armed suspect Jason Nichols forced his way into 61-year-old Wendel Wurst's Garden City home and confronted the couple.

Garden City Police Chief Michael Utz says Nichols ordered Wurst to the ground and bound the judge's hands.

Utz says Wurst's 62-year-old wife Rhonda Wurst was allowed to use the bathroom, where she called police on her cellphone. She was later released.

The standoff ended more than five hours later, at which time Wurst was freed.

Police say the suspect was upset over a custody case Wurst handled.

Garden City police wrote on Facebook Tuesday: 'The hostage situation has been resolved without incident. 'There are still a lot of moving parts in the investigation, please stay away from the area. 'The suspect and hostage are okay.'

Utz was filmed by KWCH saying: 'After several hours of negotiation, the suspect surrendered at 12.34pm this afternoon and was taken into custody without incident.

'Chief Judge Wurst was located and is in good health.'

Nichols may be charged for aggravated assault, aggravated burglary, kidnapping, terrorism, and criminal threat, the TV station reported.

Abusive dad unhappy about child custody defies restraining order, murders three (Jacksonville, Florida)

So if dad MURRAY LANCASTER violated a restraining order and had been arrested for battery and resisting arrest, then WHY was he able to run around and murder three different people? Why wasn't his @$$ parked in jail where it belonged? It's because Florida is notoriously indifferent to domestic violence. No surprise that this batterer/killer also tried to use a custody battle to further extend his abuse/control--that's what abusers and killers do.

No doubt there are some sick fathers rights people out there arguing that this poor little spree killer was "driven" to it. But then they have never met a violent criminal they didn't just love to pieces.

Florida Shooting Suspect Dead After Allegedly Killing Ex-Wife, Ex-Girlfriend and Her Father By Lucy Westcott On 5/3/16 at 3:30 PM

Three people were shot dead in Green Cove Springs, northern Florida on Tuesday. A manhunt for the suspect, identified as Murray Lancaster, is underway. A man in northern Florida on Tuesday allegedly abducted his ex-girlfriend from Keeping It Classy beauty salon and then later shot to death the woman and her father as well as his ex-wife before turning the gun on himself.

During a manhunt for the suspect, Murray Lancaster, 41, SWAT teams surrounded a property in Green Cove Springs, about 33 miles south of Jacksonville. Lancaster’s body was found by officials inside a camper trailer. He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Lancaster allegedly abducted his ex-girlfriend, Valorie Short, on Tuesday morning at around 9:45 a.m. after holding her and her co-workers at gunpoint. He then drove her to an area near the Magnolia Point Golf & Country Club, where Short’s father, Welland “Buddy” Short, was encouraged to meet them. Lancaster shot and killed them both, Florida news outlet WFAA 8 reports, before driving to the Rosemary Hill Road Landfill, the workplace of his ex-wife, Erica Green, where he allegedly shot and killed her.

According to Jacksonville news outlet News4Jax, one of the victims was pregnant. Valorie Short is believed to have two young sons and Green also has two young children. Green was engaged to another man, according to local news.

Lancaster is the nephew of Scott Lancaster, a former sheriff of Clay County, and is also related to Larry Lancaster, a former Clay County commissioner. Officials did not have contact with Lancaster before he killed himself, though Clay County Sheriff Rick Beseler said he went to a local school to try to say goodbye to his children. A teacher at the school told police Lancaster was not able to see them.

During a press conference on Tuesday, Beseler said Short had a restraining order against Lancaster. The suspect, who was last week fired from the Georgia-Pacific Mill in nearby Palatka, recently violated the court order filed against him by Short and was arrested for her battery and for resisting arrest.

The motive in the shooting is still unknown, but Beseler said it involves a “domestic-type situation where divorces and child custody” were involved.

“The incident is over and everyone is safe at this point,” said Beseler. “This is a terrible and tragic event for our community.”

Also on Tuesday, a separate, unrelated shooting occurred in nearby Palatka after a man allegedly shot his girlfriend in the parking lot of the local health department. The woman, whose name has not been released, was killed and the shooter was at-large.

UPDATE: 9:30 P.M. — Newark Police confirm the father is in custody, and the baby is safe.

According to police records, the man holding the baby captive was 37-year-old Rudy Soto.

The police report reads, “The patrol officers attempted to talk with the Soto, but he refused to speak to the officers. Officers initially feared the victim of the domestic violence may have also been inside the apartment. Officers were able to contact the victim, and were able to determine she was at work, but her one year old son was inside with the Soto, who is the father of the child. After 12 hours of negotiating with the Soto, he calmly exited the apartment with his baby in a stroller and surrendered to police. Soto has been taken into custody and the baby is safe and unharmed.”

UPDATE 5:00 P.M. — Police are negotiating with a domestic violence suspect who is allegedly holding a baby captive in Newark this evening, a Newark police commander said.

Dad assaults mom, hold two kids hostage in police standoff (Vinton, Iowa)

Dad has all the red flags for future fatalities. He needs to be stopped and dealt with now.

Vinton child tased in father's scuffle with police

June 12, 2015 6:59 pm • KCRG-The Gazette

VINTON | A Vinton man who assaulted a woman and held his two children captive Thursday has been charged with domestic abuse assault and child endangerment.

According to a release from the Vinton Police Department, officers with the Benton County Sheriff’s Office and Vinton police responded to a call of a man breaking things in a rage at 820 E. Fourth Street.

Police said upon arriving at the scene, the man, identified as Joshua Carl Hendryx, 34, had shut himself in the home alone with his two children, a 5-year-old and a 20-month-old.

Hendryx had assaulted the mother of the children, who had abrasions, bruises and scratches to her head and torso from being punched, choked and thrown against the wall and furniture, police said.

Police said Hendryx refused to allow the children to leave the house and would not cooperate with officers.

Police said the 5-year-old was able to escape the home unharmed. Police then entered the residence and found Hendryx holding the 20-month-old, shielding himself from police. Police said he remained highly agitated and refused to hand the child to officers despite their efforts to negotiate with him.

Police eventually were forced to physically control Hendryx while attempting to remove the child. Hendryx continued to fight back and police deployed a Taser.

Police said during the brief struggle Hendryx placed the child in the path of one of the four Taser probes that were fired. Three of the probes hit Hendryx, but one probe struck the child in the left foot. Officers were then able to remove the child and take Hendryx into custody.

The child was treated at Virginia Gay Hospital and then transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where the probe was successfully removed. There were no complications with the removal of the probe and no other signs of injury to the child.

Hendryx was taken to the Benton County Jail. He has been charged with domestic abuse assault and child endangerment, both class D felonies, and interference with officials acts, a simple misdemeanor.

Dad angry about "custody dispute" attacks police department headquarters (Dallas, Texas)

I don't get generally around to reposting from other blogs, but this analysis is so spot-on that I'm making an exception.  Dad is identified as JAMES BOULWARE.

James Boulware: Another male rage bomb goes off in Dallas

Jun 13

Posted by David Futrelle

Last night, as you probably have heard, a Dallas man named James Boulware launched a one-man quasi-military assault on the Dallas Police Department headquarters, firing an automatic rife with such abandon that early reports suggested that there were as many as four different shooters. After fleeing the scene in an armored “Zombie Apocalypse Van,” leaving behind an assortment of improvised explosives as a kind of going away gift, Boulware was cornered in a restaurant parking lot; after a long standoff, he was eventually killed by a police sniper’s bullet. It was something of a miracle that no one but Boulware ended up dead.

Boulware’s father told local news that his son had been “pushed past” his “breaking point” after losing custody of his son. Men’s Rights activists often describe men who “resort to violence” after losing a custody dispute as victims of a cruel family court system. But in Boulware’s case, it appears, nothing could be further from the truth.

Because, you see, he lost custody of his son two years ago — after a violent incident that offered a chilling prequel to last night’s rampage. As the local NBC affiliate reported at the time

A Paris man was arrested after family members reported to authorities that they were concerned he could go on a shooting spree. …

Officers confiscated several guns from a Paris home, after arresting the owner. “There are four or five long guns and three or four pistols, tubs full of ammunition, and the body armor,” says Paris Police Chief Bob Hundley.

James Boulware, 33, allegedly grabbed and choked his mother in Dallas on Tuesday morning, and he has made other threats, police and family members said.

“That he was going to just kill all the adult members of the family and then that’s when he made the comment he may shoot up some churches and schools,” says Hundley.

“He had been talking about the schools and churches being soft targets, being easy targets because no one in them was armed,” a man who identified himself as Boulware’s brother “Andrew” said.

After this incident, a judge handed over custody of Boulware’s son to Boulware’s mother; it seems rather clear that the court was right to deem him unfit to care for the boy.

Further confounding the standard Men’s Rights narrative is the fact that the mother of the child, reportedly a drug addict, was also deemed unfit; both were ordered by the court to pay child support to Boulware’s mother.

Boulware was well-known to local police for this and other family disputes — as well as for repeatedly threatening the judge involved in his case.

Indeed, he littered Facebook and other websites with comments ranting about the alleged injustice done to him, alongside angry and often hateful attacks on “Comrad [sic] Obama” and the “fag loving, abortion have typical queer American brain washed troll[s]” who argued with him online. After a commenter called him “dumb” in one recent discussion of American foreign policy, Boulware declared that “I’M TRYING TO FIND OUT WHERE YOU LIVE SO I CAN DRAG YOU OUT OF YOUR TRAILOR AND BEAT YOUR BITCH A$$!!!!”

His conspiracy theories may have been driven by delusions; Boulware’s mother says her son “heard voices” and that she and other family members had tried in vain to get him the mental health treatment he needed.

After last night’s events, Boulware’s father told local media that, while he didn’t think what his son had done was right, “we all have a breaking point, and they pushed him past it.”

But Boulware, it seems fairly clear, was already plenty broken long before “the system” got to him.

And no matter how sad or angry he was about losing custody of his son, nothing justifies a violent attack on innocent strangers with assault rifles and explosives. Most people, even if they were pushed far past their breaking point, wouldn’t respond with attempted mass murder. We are not all rage bombs waiting to go off. And that’s when this post comes back around to the Men’s Rights movement. No, despite his anger at the police and courts for “taking away his kid,” and his penchant for calling people “BITCHES” in comments sections he doesn’t seem to have been a Men’s Rights activist.

But his was the kind of rage that Men’s Rights activists like to “warn” us all about; his violence was the sort of violence that MRAs all too often excuse.

See the rest here.

Dad in "custody dispute" takes 4-month-old baby hostage in police standoff (Denver, Colorodo)

I presume that UNNAMED DAD was never married to the mother--and yet a criminal with "several outstanding felony warrants" was still allowed to wage a "custody dispute" with the mother of a 6-month-old infant? Even under freaking Sharia, mothers are allowed to be caretakers of their babies.

This is fathers rights in action, folks. A criminal--allegedly armed with knives--gets to terrorize his ex-girlfriends by threatening to take an young infants away from her. He even brings in the police and screws up traffic as part of his massive Daddy Drama hostage situation.

Fathers, especially never married fathers, should NOT be allowed to strip mothers of their babies without SOLID evidence of abuse/neglect. Criminal fathers should have their rights cut automatically. Enough of feeding the male entitlement of these little sh**s.

Denver police: Suspect in custody after a four-hour standoff at 3200 block of Osage

Updated: 06/09/2015 09:55:35 PM MDT

A suspect is in custody after a four-hour standoff Tuesday night at an apartment on the 3200 block of Osage Street.

Police said the incident began about 4:45 p.m., with a report of a custody dispute over a 6-month-old baby. At first, the father refused to give up the child. After about two hours, however, the baby was turned over to authorities.

However, the father, who police said is wanted on several outstanding felony warrants, refused to leave the apartment.

Police do not believe the man had a gun, but they do think he may have had knives.

The standoff ended shortly before 9 p.m., when police announced the suspect was in custody.

Numerous police were on the scene.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said the off ramps from Interstate 25 to Osage were closed because of police activity.

This story will be updated when more information becomes available.

Dad who killed 3-year-old son in murder-suicide identified (Trabuco Canyon, California)

We posted on this case earlier. Dad has now been identified as LUIS GUILLERMO ARIZMENDI.

Trabuco Canyon Community Attempts To Heal After Murder-Suicide Involving Child

May 28, 2015 6:01 PM

TRABUCO CANYON (CBSLA.com) — A Trabuco Canyon community is attempting to heal after a murder-suicide there Wednesday during a SWAT standoff.

Authorities said Luis Guillermo Arizmendi, 41, murdered his 3-year-old son Sebastian and then killed himself.

The man and his son lived in a home with his wife and an infant daughter on Swallows Lane.

CBS2’s Michele Gile on Thursday spoke to devastated neighbors.

She also spoke to neighbors who said the suspect had an explosive temper.

“Basically, I just said ‘You just keep to yourself and stay with your family and leave my family alone,’ ” said neighbor Al Perin.

He told Gile he had had a run-in with Arizmendi a few weeks ago.

Perin and his wife said they have long been concerned about Arizmendi’s wife and two small children.

“Whenever you see a situation where an individual appears to be so angry they don’t want to communicate with their neighbors and any communication you get is one of confrontation, you have concern for your own family as well,” Perin said.

SWAT had responded to the home after a call about domestic violence just after 6 p.m. Wednesday.

A 911 hang-up call was traced to the residence.

Neighbors said they saw the man’s wife run down the street holding their 18-month-old daughter.

Arizmendi was reportedly holed up in a bathroom with the boy and holding a handgun.

Neighbors said they were afraid of Arizmendi, and police had been to the home on other occasions.

“We would be very scared,” said Isabella Perin, “and we saw the cops there two weeks ago doing a welfare check. We didn’t know if it was for him or her, but we figured out it was her, from her work, checking on her.”

A group of seventh-graders affected by the tragedy sold lemonade and cookies Thursday to help the survivors.

“We just wanted to do something that could shed light on this rainy situation and make everyone smile in a situation that brought us all down,” said Reagan Hayes.

Gile reported that members of the Stonecliffe community plan to tie ribbons around trees to remember the two who died and in support of the mother and daughter who survived.

Police said Arizmendi was unemployed and the family moved frequently.

After battering mom, drunk dad takes 17-month-old son hostage and threatens to harm him with a knife; dad shot dead by SWAT team (Middletown, New Jersey)

Thank goodness the baby wasn't hurt in this little piece of Daddy Drama. Guess with Daddy dead, there is no chance Daddy will be pulling any of this crap in the future. Good riddance.

Father holding baby hostage shot dead by SWAT team

MIDDLETOWN, N.J. -- A New Jersey man who was holding his 17-month-old son hostage was fatally shot by a member of the Monmouth County, N.J., SWAT team, reports CBS New York.

The child's mother called police around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday night. She said 39-year-old Scott McAllister was intoxicated, had beaten her and was threatening to harm their child with a knife, according to a statement released by the office of New Jersey Attorney General John Jay Hoffman.

When police arrived, the mother of the child had fled from the house, officials said.

McAllister was locked inside his Middletown home with the boy and refused to allow police to enter, according to police. Hostage negotiators tried for hours to get McAllister to turn over his child.

The negotiations ended around 4:30 a.m., when the county SWAT team forced its way in and an officer shot McAllister.

The identity of the officer who shot McAllister has not yet been released and authorities have not said how many times McAllister was shot.

McAllister's son, who was near him according to police, was not harmed.

Neighbors, many of whom were outside during the shooting, told CBS New York that McAllister was a fisherman, but few knew other details about him.

The state Attorney General's Shooting Response Team -- which looks into shootings involving state troopers and emergency response personnel -- is investigating the shooting to determine if it was justified.

TRABUCO CANYON, Calif. (KABC) -- A 41-year-old man and his 3-year-old son were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide in Trabuco Canyon on Wednesday night, investigators said.

Orange County sheriff's deputies responded to a 911 hang-up call at a home in the 00 block of Swallows Lane at about 6:10 p.m. Upon arrival, authorities made contact with a woman, who told them a domestic dispute occurred and her husband was barricaded inside.

"When my husband came out, he saw a lady with a child run from the third house up to a police car," neighbor Arlene Richens said.

A SWAT team forced its way into the home and found both the man and boy dead.

The woman was able to flee the home with her 18-month-old daughter uninjured.

Neighbor Kareem Lehaf said the family kept to themselves.

"This place has never had this before," Lehaf said. "It's pretty scary and it's unpredictable."

Dad waves gun at CPS worker trying to remove kids, starts police standofff (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

CPS just luuuuvs "father involvement," so for them to take kids away from an apparently single father (notice there is ZERO mention of the mother(s)) means he was probably more than just a little neglectful. Of course, UNNAMED DAD stepped right up and PROVED what a volatile and dangerous (and alcoholic?) loony he really was. Just in case CPS had any doubts or anything. Way to go, Dad!

Wonder what happened to the mother(s) of these kids. Did he wave guns (or worse) at them too?

Armed Father Barricades Himself Inside Philly Home After DHS Workers Try to Remove 7 Children: Police

By David Chang

A father is in custody after he allegedly pointed a gun at a DHS worker under court orders to take his children. (Published Monday, Apr 6, 2015)
Updated at 12:11 AM EDT on Tuesday, Apr 7, 2015

A father is in custody after police say he pointed a gun at a DHS worker who was trying to remove two of his seven children.

Investigators say the DHS workers went to a home on the 1800 block of 67th Avenue around 8:15 p.m. Monday to remove a 10-year-old and 12-year-old child who lived there due to parental neglect. When they arrived, the 49-year-old father of the children allegedly waved and pointed a handgun at one of the workers.

The worker called police and the father barricaded himself inside the home, according to investigators.

A barricade situation was declared and police and a SWAT team soon arrived. The officers were able to get four of the suspect's children out safely followed by the other three. The father remained barricaded inside however, police said.

Eventually officials sent a robot with a camera inside the home. The camera captured the man on the floor of the house, intoxicated, according to officials. A SWAT team then went in and removed him from the house.

NBC10 captured the suspect screaming as he was placed in a police van. All seven of his children are currently in protective custody.

Dad with joint custody arrested for murder of 5-year-old son; boy found dead after police standoff (Tulsa, Oklahoma)

Another child dead thanks to fathers rights. Once again, the legal system favored Daddy's right to do whatever the hell he wanted with no regard for the safety or security of mothers and children.
Who couldn't have seen this coming? Seriously? Dad BYRON CREECH had a history of abusive controlling behavior INCLUDING DEATH THREATS. And intimidating the family with a gun. Huge red flags here.
Mom even managed to get an order of protection against this POS.
AND THE COURTS STILL GAVE HIM JOINT CUSTODY. What the f***???
Of course they put her and her son at complete risk by doing this, and just retraumatized them all over again. Daddy vandalized Mom's car during an exchange. And then this...
Meet the latest addition to the Killer Dads and Custody list for Oklahoma.
When is this going to stop??? We need to quit giving violent men access to children NOW!

Dad Arrested For Murder; 5-Year-Old Son Found Dead After Standoff
Posted: Mar 20, 2015 6:59 AM EDT Updated: Mar 20, 2015 6:45 PM EDT
TULSA, Oklahoma - Police say they found a 5-year-old boy dead inside an apartment after a man involved in a 17-hour standoff surrendered on Friday morning.
Officers said the standoff with the unidentified man began at about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Riverchase Apartments in the 7900 block of South Riverside Drive.
Bryon Creech, 36, surrendered to police at about 10:30 a.m. on Friday. Police entered the apartment and found the boy's body inside. Police said the boy was his son.
Creech has been booked into the Tulsa County Jail for first-degree murder, shooting with intent to kill, kidnapping, second-degree burglary and violating a protective order.
Police said the man came to the apartment where his wife and child live, violating a protective order. They said the couple is going through a divorce but have joint custody of the child.
Late Friday afternoon, police said the woman left the apartment to go to work on Thursday, and some time after that, Creech came to her apartment and brought their son. He had court-allowed visitation with the boy, police said. Officers said Creech broke into the apartment and barricaded himself and the boy inside, but his wife was able to see him remotely through surveillance cameras she installed.
His wife called police to report Creech was inside her residence, and shortly after officers arrived, they said Creech fired at least 10 shots.
Police evacuated the complex and set up a secure area around the apartment where the man and the child were located. Officers said the department's special operations team talked with Creech by phone all night in an effort to get him to surrender.
Court documents show Creech's wife filed a petition for a protective order in July 2014 after Creech threatened her with a gun. The woman was afraid Creech would hurt her or her son, records say. She also cited his size – Creech is 6-foot-6 and weighs 330 pounds, according to her petition.
He is a very large angry loud man. He blocked with his body in our bedroom and would not allow me to leave the bedroom. Recently his anger has been escalating. He constantly threatens and harasses me in a loud and frightening cruel way. My son is afraid of him and has told me so. The defendant has had anger management treatment before. This spring during an argument while I was trying to leave he placed a hand gun on the couch between us. I was frightened to leave because of his behavior and the gun. He has taken my cell phone away in the past to prevent me from calling 911. He has also taken my car keys in order to trap me at the house. I am very afraid of him and know that things will get really bad when I file for divorce. He threatened “to make my life a living hell” if I filed. I am afraid he will hurt me and my son. His behavior is getting worse and out of control. He has forced me to do things I did not want to do.”
Creech also filed a petition seeking a protective order against his wife. He wrote in the document that he found bruises on his son's thigh and back in January. He claimed the child said "mommy grabbed me and pushed me." Creech's request for a protective order against the woman was denied.
He was booked into the Tulsa County Jail on Friday afternoon.
In November 2014, Creech was charged with malicious injury to property, a misdemeanor. According to court documents, Creech vandalized his wife's vehicle during a meeting to exchange custody of the child. QuikTrip surveillance footage caught Creech scraping something down the side of her vehicle, an affidavit says. That case still is ongoing in Tulsa County District Court.

Dad in "custody dispute" murdered two kids before police standoff (Springfield, Missouri)

The (deliberate?) police ignorance about this crime should be astounding, but is, in fact routine. This despite lots of research that clearly explains why fathers like WILLIAM R. WILLIAMS murder their kids. There is nothing "unfathomable" about it, nothing unusual. The murders fit a very common pattern. And these crimes ARE PREVENTABLE, despite their claims to the contrary.

Let's identify the red flags for them.

1) Fathers engaging in "custody disputes" (i.e. one-sided custody sieges against the mother) are highly likely to have histories of domestic violence and child abuse.

2) Notice that the father still appeared to have some sort of joint custody/visitation rights, as the mother had trouble AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE with retrieving them from the father. Clearly, the violent father has some serious control issues, which is an especially big red flag for this kind of crime.

3) The children were clearly in distress from the incident, although the rather stupid police officer failed to register that the crying was in fact distress. Given that the kids were only 2 and 4, they wouldn't be able to necessarily verbalize their distress well. But given that the little boy RAN TO HIS MOTHER, that alone speaks volumes.

4) The fact that Daddy was armed to the hilt is also a bad sign, especially in conjunction with everything else we know about him. Notice that after the earlier incident, the police didn't even bother to enter the father's apartment or investigate whether he had weaponry. Utter FAIL.

So no, this crime was preventable. Stop giving violent controlling fathers access to kids. Problem solved. See the Killer Dads and Custody list for MISSOURI to see similar crimes. Not so rare, are they?

Police: Children were dead before standoff began

Springfield police likely never had a chance of saving two young children found dead Monday at Lake Shore Apartments, according to Police Chief Paul Williams.

The chief said Tuesday that preliminary autopsy results indicate Brodie Williams, 4, and Marley Williams, 2, died of gunshot wounds at least a day before officers made entry into the apartment where the children's father, 51-year-old William R. Williams, engaged in an extended standoff with police.

"The children were probably killed 24 to 48 hours before we discovered them, before we went in," the chief said. "Unfortunately I think the children were already dead when we got the call."
William R. Williams, who was found dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound, is thought to have died sometime between about noon Monday and the time police made entry into the apartment, shortly after 6 p.m.

An incident report released Tuesday afternoon said police initially were alerted after the suspect "called a third party and made an allegation that he had killed his two children and was waiting on officers to arrive so that he could kill himself."

Court documents show William R. Williams had filed for divorce from the children's mother and had been involved in a custody dispute. A Nov. 10 police report alleges that he had locked himself and the children in the apartment at least once before, although police did not enter the apartment then or note the presence of firearms.

Chief Paul Williams, who is not related to the suspect or victims, said officers worked to confirm the children's deaths during the hours-long standoff that ended Monday evening.

"Early on, our negotiators thought that to be the case," he said, noting that officers' actions — or in this case, decision to delay action — were based on the information at hand.

"When it transitioned into an 'armed and barricaded' situation (rather than a potential hostage situation) the sense of urgency goes away," he said. "We're going to stay as long as we need to."
"I can't think of anything we would have done differently," the chief said.

At the briefing, Williams said the suspect and police negotiators talked about the kids but the man never expressly acknowledged killing them. But he did make comments indicating he might kill himself or try to provoke police into killing him. Later Tuesday, the chief said he had since learned that the suspect had admitted killing the children in a phone call sometime Monday morning.

"He made comments about 'ending it, it's not going to end well,'" the chief said. "Throughout there was concern ... he was wanting us to do that for him."

Officers "would have taken a shot" if warranted

The chief said officers found "handguns, rifles and ammunition" in the apartment where William R. Williams and the children were found.

Officers were prepared to shoot the suspect, who at one point appeared on a balcony carrying a rifle. But the threshold for using deadly force was never crossed, the chief said.

"In this situation, if the subject had threatened someone or pointed his weapon at a citizen or officer ... we would have taken a shot," he said. "(But) he never presented the firearm or pointed it at anyone ... and he hadn't made any specific threat to anyone."

Negotiators kept in contact with the suspect by loudspeaker or cellphone for much the standoff, the chief said. "He was pretty active contacting people and responding until about noon (Monday)."
Law enforcement activity picked up briefly about that time but soon calmed.

"Come out the front door of your apartment. Do it now," an officer said into a bullhorn about 12:10 p.m. "This is your last chance."

Despite the officer's warning, the standoff continued. Members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol arrived after noon to relieve the Springfield tactical officers who had been on-site overnight, a transition that the police chief called seamless. Numerous ambulances and Springfield Fire Department vehicles also were on scene.

The apartment where William R. Williams had holed up was out of public view given how police secured the scene, making it hard to ascertain developments. Members of the media and Lake Shore residents who had been evacuated from their homes were kept well away from the area, as were family members of William R. Williams and the children.

"I understand the frustration from folks" who were displaced by the standoff, the chief said. "But at that point we're going to take as long as it takes" to resolve the situation safely.

The police chief noted that, in addition to the tactical officers involved in the daylong standoff, other police were at the complex interacting with those affected by the situation. "Officers engaged with family and friends for that same amount of time."

A truck marked as belonging to the fire department bomb squad arrived about 5 p.m. and a robot was deployed. A loud boom could be heard about 6:15 p.m. The chief said the sound was related to officers making entry into the apartment, although he declined to provide additional detail about tactics or equipment used.

Inside the apartment, officers found William R. Williams, along with the bodies of the children, all dead.

"There's really nothing we could do to prevent it," the chief said.

Divorce filings, custody dispute preceded deaths

Court records indicate Williams R. Williams filed for divorce in March 2014 from Brittnee Williams, whom he had married in May 2011, but the case was later dismissed. He filed again for divorce in Nov 4. The November divorce filing says that Williams worked for CST, LLC at the time.

Brittnee Williams and the children were living in Lebanon by then, according to the Nov. 10 incident report police released Tuesday.

The report said Brittnee Williams called police when her soon-to-be ex-husband did not return the children to her in Lebanon as per a custody agreement, which had not yet been signed by a judge. The report says William R. Williams had locked the children in his apartment and refused to open up when police arrived. In the report, an officer said the children could be heard crying "but it did not sound as though they were in distress."

William R. Williams at one point emerged onto the balcony with the children, according to the report. Later, while he was distracted, the 4-year-old boy opened the front door and ran to his mother. The 2-year-old girl was left in her father's custody while her mother sought a signed judge's order, according to the report.

Asked if Williams' family difficulties or a health issue had influenced his actions, Police Chief Paul Williams said he didn't know.
"It is unfathomable to me that a parent would kill their own children," the chief said. "We'll never know what led him to do this."

Timeline of the standoff

About 23 hours passed between the time police were called to unit 2809 at Lake Shore Apartments on Sunday and the time Special Response Team officers turned command over to detectives for crime scene processing, according to a timeline provided by the department.

Sunday

4:06 p.m. – Springfield Fire Department fire marshals arrive to assist with searching and clearing interior
5:52 p.m. – Officers implement plan to breach/gain access to the apartment
7:19 p.m. – Scene turned over to Springfield detectives for crime scene processing

Tuesday

5:25 a.m. – Detectives clear the scene

Quiet scene at apartment Tuesday

The tactical officers and detectives that had swarmed over the Lake Shore Apartment complex Sunday and Monday were gone by mid-morning Tuesday, replaced by maintenance workers who appeared to be fixing or assessing damage sustained during the standoff.

Workers appeared to be repairing the window of the unit where the bodies of William R. Williams and his children were found, as well as a nearby fence. Hazmat-clad individuals were inside the apartment; a nearby truck indicated they worked for Springfield-based Sunbelt Environmental Services.

Several individuals residing near Williams' unit — who would have been among those evacuated during the 23-hour standoff — declined to comment. After a short period, apartment complex staff told a News-Leader reporter and photographer they would be considered trespassing if they were not Lake Shore residents.

"We've got to protect everyone's emotions and privacy," the staff member said.

About three miles away at an apartment in the 4300 block of South Timbercreek Avenue — listed as the address of Williams, his wife and the two children on a November divorce filing — several residents who answered doors said they had either recently moved in or didn't know the family.

Father arrested, ending east side Cleveland standoff

WKYC Staff, WKYC 7:58 p.m. EST January 10, 2015

CLEVELAND -- A 33-year-old father is under arrest after a 4-hour standoff on Cleveland's east side Saturday.

The standoff started at about 11 a.m. on Gruss Avenue. Police say it began as a domestic dispute between the mother and father of a 2-year-old child. The father forced the mother out of the home during the dispute, keeping the 2-year-old, another 6-year-old and the suspect's mother inside the home.

After an hour of negotiations, Cleveland SWAT was called to assist. Police say the suspect's brother and community activist Art McCoy assisted in negotiations. The children were eventually let out of the house and the man was arrested on outstanding misdemeanor warrants.

The standoff ended at about 3 p.m.

The children were examined by EMS crews and were not harmed.

LONG BEACH (CNS/FOX 11) - A 22-year-old domestic abuse suspect, with his 5-month-old baby inside his vehicle, was chased by police from Long Beach to San Pedro Saturday in a pursuit that included at least two shootouts, but neither the infant nor the chased driver were hurt, police said.

One Long Beach police officer suffered minor injuries in the second shootout, when glass shattered in a patrol car, Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department said.

The incident began just before 2 a.m. with a shooting during a domestic dispute at a home the suspect shares with the mother of his son and other family members in the 6500 block of East Rosebay Street, Pratt said.

The suspect, identified as parolee Joseph Gonzales, was gone when officers arrived, but he called the home and said he was on his way back with his infant son, Pratt said, adding that the man leveled threats at his family members and police officers.

"He specifically stated he would harm the baby and use him as a shield against police,'' Pratt said.

He returned to the scene in a dark-colored SUV, got out and confronted officers, prompting an exchange of gunfire, she said.

"The suspect then got back in his vehicle and fled, and officers initiated a vehicle pursuit,'' Pratt said. "It was unknown if the baby was actually in the vehicle.''

In the area of Bandini and Oliver streets in San Pedro, Gonzales stopped the SUV and shot at officers, who returned fire, she said.

Gonzales then got back into the vehicle and drove a short distance before stopping and surrendering, Pratt said.

"The infant was located in the back seat of the suspect's vehicle at the conclusion of the pursuit. Although uninjured, he was transported to a local hospital as a precaution and released later to family in San Pedro. A handgun was found in the front seat of the suspect's vehicle,'' she said.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital, where he was treated and released, Pratt said.

Gonzales was booked on suspicion of attempted murder, evading police, child cruelty that could result in possible injury or death, assault with a firearm on a police officer, being a felon in possession of a firearm and a parole violation, she said.

He was being held without bail at the Long Beach City Jail, Pratt said.

Suit: DCFS contractor negligent before dad set two kids on fire (Cook County, Illinois)

Suit: DCFS contractor negligent before father set two children on fire

Posted: 12/29/2014, 08:07pm | Sam Charles     

The county-appointed public guardian of a boy and girl who were set on fire by their father in late 2012 is suing a DCFS-contracted welfare agency, alleging its negligence led to the death of one child and the severe, ongoing injuries of the other.

Robert F. Harris, the appointed estate administrator of Nariyah Beler and the public guardian of her brother Naciere, filed the lawsuit Monday in Cook County Circuit Court against the Humboldt Park-based welfare agency Association House.

On Dec. 28, 2012, Nathaniel Beler set his two children, their mother and himself on fire at his mother’s West Side home, the suit stated. His daughter, 4-year-old Nariyah, and her mother, Taniya Johnson, died. His son Naciere, then 9, suffered burns to more than 40 percent of his body.

Beler’s death was ruled a suicide by self-immolation, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

In the months that led up to the fatal arson, Harris alleges, Association House and several of its employees breached duties that could have prevented Nariyah’s death and Naciere’s injuries.

DCFS recommended that Beler – a diagnosed schizophrenic and PCP addict with a history of going off his medication – should see his two children only in the company of a caseworker and in a “neutral” public place, the suit stated.

Under pressure from Beler, the assigned Association House caseworker allowed him to see his children at his mother’s house, the eventual scene of the fatal fire, the suit stated.

“Association House ignored or downplayed the severe danger that Mr. Beler posed,” the suit claims.

During an argument with Johnson in September 2012, Beler threatened to kill himself and his two children by pouring gasoline on them and lighting a match, the suit stated. Beler showed her two cans of gasoline, but she persuaded him to let her leave the home and go to work.

Once Johnson – who left her two children alone with Beler – got to work, her co-workers told her to call the police, leading to a standoff that eventually resulted in the safe release of both children and Beler’s involuntary commitment to a psychiatric hospital, the suit stated. There was enough gasoline in the home’s bathtub “to level the building.”

Association House knew Beler had a history of violent, erractic behavior when he was off his medication and no one from the agency ever tried to determine if he still was taking his prescriptions, the suit claims.

The agency also took Beler at his word when he said he was no longer using PCP and did not ever screen his urine to confirm he wasn’t using drugs, the suit alleges.

A representative from Association House could not be reached for comment Monday evening.

The six-count wrongful death and negligence suit seeks an unspecified amount in damages.

SWAT team rescues kids from Dad's freeway standoff drama (San Diego, California)

It appears that dad DANIEL PEREZ murdered the mother of his sons before taking off with them.

Notice the typical misleading language. We're told the "marriage" was "unstable" and "marred by domestic violence." A marriage is a relationship between entities. It isn't a "thing" per se. This is just the typical way we avoid saying DAD was "unstable" and violent. After all, HE was the one who killed a woman and abducted the kids. Not the "marriage." In other words, just away of confusing the issue of agency and who did what to whom.

SWAT team rescues boys in freeway standoff drama

Posted: Dec 11, 2014 9:04 AM EST Updated: Dec 11, 2014 8:45 PM EST

SAN DIEGO (CBS 8) - Four L.A.-area boys are safe Thursday after their father was taken into custody following a tense standoff along a Santee highway.

Daniel Perez, 43, of Montebello stopped the black 2014 Toyota Camry he was driving in the middle of the eastbound state Route 52 connector road to state Route 67 about 8:30 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. A standoff ensued until around 9:50 a.m., when two SWAT vehicles pulled up to the front and the back of the Camry and officers in full tactical gear approached the suspect and took him into custody.

Montebello police earlier named Perez a person of interest in the disappearance of his 39-year-old wife, Erica. On Thursday, the L.A. County Coroner's Office confirmed the body found in the trunk of the family car on Wednesday was Erica Perez.

The Perez family was last seen Friday, police said, adding that extended family members described the couple's marriage as unstable and marred by domestic violence. An Amber Alert was issued early Thursday morning for four of the couple's five children.

Sometime around 8 a.m. Thursday, officers pursued Perez from the downtown El Cajon area to state Route 125 to the highway ramp where he stopped. A CHP spokesman said that officers located Perez in the downtown El Cajon area earlier Thursday using the LoJack technology installed on the Camry.

Just before 9 a.m., two of the four young boys got out safely and ran to nearby authorities, but two others remained in the vehicle along with their father until he was taken into custody.

Before the SWAT vehicles pulled up, about a dozen law enforcement cruisers and SUVs stopped behind the black Toyota Camry, which was on an elevated transition roadway. Officers with weapons drawn were just yards from the car.

Perez was talking to law enforcement via cell phone, the CHP said. The CHP reports that during the hour long standoff, Perez was calm and then just suddenly snapped. Also during the standoff, family members in the San Diego area were feeding negotiators information.

Once the suspect's car was blocked in by SWAT vehicles, the standoff quickly came to an end.

"The suspect attempted to jump over the guard rail, was shot with one bean bag nonlethal. Immediately taken to the ground and is in custody. All four boys I saw and talk to them. Seem to be okay physically no injuries. Mentally we don't know how this has affected them,” said Kevin Pearlstein with the CHP. #Officers believe Perez was headed to Mexico.

Perez and his children were transported separately Thursday afternoon to Montebello. The fifth child -- who was not involved in the standoff -- was being cared for by his grandparents.

DETROIT - There was high drama Friday morning on Detroit's west side.

A 1-year-old boy named Kyle is just fine after a scary situation involving his father. #Family members say a 21-year-old man named Napoleon fought with his girlfriend and a cousin Friday morning because his girlfriend stayed out all night. The two women tried to drive away from the home and that's when the man fired a shot at them.

The man then ran back into the home on Grandmont near Joy with his 1-year-old son. Fearing a barricaded gunman situation, the man's grandmother called him to tell him to give up.

"He said, 'Granny, I'm coming,'" said Mary Wells, the man's grandmother.

Instead, the father fled with his son. Police caught up to him right away on Chicago. He had his son and a gun in his pants.

He tried to flee with a 1-year-old child. Units were in the area and were able to place him in custody," said Detroit Police Commander Elvin Barren.

For little Kyle, he was met by hugs and smiles from Detroit police. His family is happy that he is OK.

A child who was found injured at the scene of a fatal shooting Monday in Fayette County has died, according to the Travis County medical examiner’s office.

Azareyh Aleyiah Owens was nearly 19 months old when she died Tuesday afternoon. Her manner of death is pending an autopsy, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Her cause of death is homicide.

The child’s mother, 19-year-old Justice Martinez, was found dead with a gunshot wound around noon Monday at a home on U.S. 290 near Ledbetter, east of Giddings, authorities have said.

The Fayette County sheriff’s office said the child’s father, DeAndre Rashad Owens, was a person of interest in the killing. Owens, 25, was found dead later that day in Austin.

Austin police said that Owens had called 911 around 1 p.m. Monday saying he was suicidal. SWAT officers tried to establish contact with Owens at his apartment at 1017 Clayton Lane. After a three-hour standoff, the officers forced their way into the apartment and found him dead of an apparent suicide.

The Fayette County sheriff’s office did not respond to multiple requests for comment Wednesday.

Police: Brockton man uses daughter as shield

BROCKTON, Mass. (AP) - Police say a Brockton man led police on a car chase through four towns with his 3-year-old daughter in the vehicle, crashed his car, used the little girl as a shield, then dropped her and tried to run away.

Kenton Wright Jr. was held on $15,000 bail after pleading not guilty Thursday to charges including reckless endangerment of a child, failure to stop for a police officer, and drug possession.

The chase started at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday when the 30-year-old Wright allegedly fled a traffic stop in Holbrook. The chase went through Weymouth and Abington before the car crashed into a utility pole in Brockton.

The Enterprise (http://bit.ly/1uoBpU5 ) reports that the girl was taken to a hospital as a precaution but was OK.

Kenton has a pending drug case.
