Father Who Tried to Sacrifice Son in Court

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A man accused of trying to sacrifice his 8-year-old son at Mount Hope Cemetery in San Diego last weekend is scheduled to be arraigned Wednesday at the downtown courthouse.

Police said Joseph Adalberto Ramirez, 31, went to the cemetery around 4:30 p.m. Saturday and started slicing the arms of his 8-year-old son with a piece of broken glass, until he was confronted by a woman who was visiting her godson's grave and begged Ramirez to let the boy go.

According to the witness, Ramirez kept saying, "We're going to Jesus, we're going to Jesus," before pushing his son aside and running away, only to be tackled by a security guard.

The boy was taken to Rady Children's Hospital for treatment of cuts on his arms. His father was also taken to a hospital for treatment of self-inflicted wounds to his forearms, police said.

Ramirez -- who could face charges ranging from attempted murder to child abuse -- told police that his dead grandmother told him to sacrifice his son, according to Officer David Stafford.
