OAKLAND, Calif.—An Oakland father who told detectives he placed his infant son's head between couch cushions to stop him from crying has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for the boy's death.
The Oakland Tribune reports ( http://bit.ly/GJ656V) 28-year-old William Thunderhawk pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in exchange for the sentence handed down Tuesday.
Thunderhawk was originally charged with murder and assault in Wambli Thunderhawk's December 2010 death.
Thunderhawk's public defender Eric Mirzaian says his client never intended to hurt the child. Mirzaian said Thunderhawk appears to have a cognitive disability and has suffered depression over the death that led to at least two suicide attempts in jail.
An autopsy found the baby had injuries consistent with suffocation as well as three broken ribs from Thunderhawk's attempts to revive him.
