PHOENIX - A 25-year-old father has been arrested on suspicion of shaking his 3-month-old son, causing him severe brain injury.
Benjamin Shaw has been arrested on one count of child abuse.
Late Thursday night, the Phoenix Fire Department responded to the area of Greenway and 7th St for a baby in distress.
The 3-month-old baby boy was having a seizure and was taken to the hospital. Doctors determined that the baby had been shaken.
"We don't have a lot of history to show he's done this in the past, but that's the problem with shaking your child, particularly a 3-month-old. I mean they are very very fragile at that age and it's certainly just not acceptable," said Phoenix Police Sgt. Tommy Thompson.
Detectives talked to Shaw, who said he became upset and shook the baby. The baby's mother and grandmother had gone to the store at the time. Another child, a 5-year-old daughter, was home with Shaw.
The baby remains in critical but stable condition.
