Dad with shared custody convicted of 2nd-degree murder in fatal beating of 7-month-old son (Vista, California)

We live in a culture that is increasingly putting the pressure on mothers to "share" custody with men who are little more than sperm donors. In many cases they were never married to these men, and the relationship didn't even last through the pregnancy. These guys have no prior relationship with the infant. They are not bonded to the mother--or by extension--to the baby.

Babies need a consistent loving caregiver, generally the mother. They do not benefit from going off for TEN WHOLE DAYS with a "frustrated" father who cannot deal with normal infant crying. Because we ignore this basic common sense rule, babies are killed.

Dad is identified as STANFORD MOROCHO. See the Killer Dads and Custody list for California.

Father gets 15 years to life in baby’s murder
Camp Pendleton Marine ‘beat the child for a week,’ a prosecutor said

By Dana Littlefield | 4:31 p.m. May 4, 2016

VISTA — In a case a prosecutor described as “heartbreaking,” a former Camp Pendleton Marine who fatally beat his 7-month-old son was sentenced Wednesday to 15 years to life in prison.

Stanford Morocho, 23, pleaded guilty in March to second-degree murder in the 2014 death of his son, Emilio Michael Harvey. He was arrested in December 2014, on the day he brought his baby to a Naval hospital on the Marine base.

Emilio was not breathing.

The child’s mother, Jannelle Harvey, had a brief relationship with the defendant and later gave birth to their son. Although their relationship had ended, the parents had an informal agreement to share custody of the child.

Harvey, formerly a lance corporal in the Marine Corps, wept at the sentencing hearing in Vista Superior Court as she stood in front of a judge to speak about her loss. Because Harvey was too emotional to do so, a friend read Harvey’s written statement in the courtroom.

“My world was flipped upside down as I was required to navigate the unthinkable,” Harvey wrote in her letter, describing how she struggled to go on after learning of her baby’s death. She said she found it too difficult to fulfill her duties, and was honorably discharged from the military.

“I lost my baby, I lost my household, I lost the Marine Corps and I lost my identity,” the letter read.

She noted that she and others should have been preparing to celebrate Emilio’s birthday this month — he would have been 2. Instead, she was in court standing near the man responsible for her child’s murder.

“Emilio could not run away,” she said in her letter. “He could not say no... .”

Harvey said it breaks her heart to know that she only got to hear her son call her “Mama” once.\

Judge K. Michael Kirkman sentenced Morocho to the prison term prescribed by law. “It’s my opinion that the defendant should never be released from prison,” the judge said. “This is a horrible crime.”

Prosecutors have said Morocho abused his son between Dec. 2, 2014, when he took physical custody, and Dec. 12, 2014, when the baby was flown to Rady Children’s Hospital after he was taken to the Camp Pendleton base Naval hospital for a medical emergency.

Hospital staff notified Oceanside police about 9:15 a.m. that the baby had died.

According to court documents, medical staffers at the hospital found that Emilio had suffered skull and rib fractures. The Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the manner of death was homicide.

Morocho admitted to investigators that he had squeezed the baby’s ribs, smacked him on his buttocks and legs when he would not stop crying, and hit his head on a door, according to a pre-sentencing report. He also said he had pinched the baby on the chin when he was upset with the child.

After the hearing, Deputy District Attorney Ryan Saunders put it more succinctly: “He beat the child for a week.”

On Wednesday, Morocho spoke directly to Harvey in the courtroom, saying he was sorry for all the pain she had been through. His voice quivering, he said he loved Harvey because she would always be the mother of their son.

“I’m sorry for this tragedy that occurred,” the defendant said. “I hope that you will forgive me one day.”

Morocho was in a relationship with another woman, Savoeun Meas, and was living with her at the time the baby died. Prosecutors contend that she witnessed the abuse but did nothing to stop or report it.

Meas, a Marine sergeant, has pleaded guilty to felony child endangerment. She faces up to six years in prison at a hearing scheduled for May 18.

"Primary caretaker" dad pleads guilty to involutary manslaughter in death of 3-month-old son; threw baby into because he was "frustrated" (Macon, Georgia)

Macon father sentenced to prison in infant son’s 2012 death

Richard Allen Hicks, 28, of Macon, pleaded guilty Monday to involuntary manslaughter in the 2012 death of his infant son, Desmond.
He was sentenced to eight years in prison followed by two years on probation.

By AMY LEIGH WOMACK

A little more than two years after Richard Allen Hicks was injured in a grenade attack in Iraq, he was charged with murder in the death of his 3-month-old son.

Hicks had served about five years in the U.S. Army.

After receiving the purple heart and other awards, he was honorably discharged in July 2011, his lawyer, Mark Beberman said during a Monday hearing in Bibb County Superior Court.

After finding it difficult to land a job, Hicks became the primary caregiver for his three children.

July 14, 2012, the mother of his youngest child, 3-month-old Desmond, came home and found the boy seemingly asleep on Hicks’ chest, said prosecutor Kevin Ströberg.

“She picked up Desmond and he wasn’t responsive. He wasn’t breathing,” Ströberg said.

After an unsuccessful attempt to revive the child by CPR, he was rushed to a local hospital where doctors discovered he had a fractured skull and a brain bleed.

The boy’s ribs also were fractured, Ströberg said.

Desmond was declared brain dead two days later, Ströberg said.

Hicks, 28, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter Monday as part of an agreement with prosecutors.

He was sentenced to eight years in prison followed by two years on probation.

Once released, Hicks also must complete Bibb County’s Veterans Court program as a condition of his probation.

Ströberg said Hicks initially denied knowing his son was ill, but later admitted he threw him into a bassinet after becoming “frustrated” by the child’s crying.

The injuries Desmond suffered couldn’t have been the result of an accident unless he’d “fallen from a height of two stories,” Ströberg said.

Had the case gone to trial, Beberman said he would have argued that Desmond’s death was an accident and his client suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The boy’s head struck a plastic music box attached to the bassinet, likely causing a slow brain bleed, he said.

Children suffering such an injury have been known to cry at first, but then get quiet and go to sleep and show no outward signs that something’s wrong as the brain swells, Beberman said.

There’s a good chance the rib injuries are a result of the CPR attempt, he said.

Hicks has been held at the county jail since his July 16, 2012, arrest, according to jail records.

"Frustrated" dad faces felony battery charge in death of 2-month-old daughter (Franklin, Indiana)

Happens again and again. Unemployed/underemployed (and possibly unemployable) dad drafted into infant caregiving since Mom has to go back to work--since we don't have paid maternity leave requirements or anything. Of course, the @$$hole gets "frustrated" and bashes the baby. And, as almost always happens, our big Macho Hero is too much of a coward to call 911 or seek medical help. He leaves that task to Mom.

This time the dad is identified as JAMISON CYRUS ALLAN HENDLEY.

Father faces felony in baby’s death

By Abby Armbruster

Frustrated with the baby’s crying, a Franklin father shook his 2-month-old daughter and then threw her across the room into a chair.

Jamison Cyrus Allan Hendley, 22, realized the baby was not breathing right. He then put the baby to bed and got into the shower. Shortly after, the baby’s mother came home from work and realized something was wrong with 2-month-old Braelyn and took her to the hospital.

Four days later, the baby died at Riley Hospital for Children at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis. An autopsy showed the infant died of blunt force trauma to her head, causing massive brain injuries. Doctors at the hospital said the extent of the damage showed the injury wasn’t accidental. Days later and after multiple interviews with investigators, Hendley told police the details of what happened that day.

This week, he was charged with battery resulting in death of a child younger than 14. He could face 10 to 30 years in prison, Johnson County Prosecutor Brad Cooper said.

The charge is the highest level charge the prosecutor’s office can file for a shaken baby case, Cooper said, adding, “The evidence fits it.”

Hendley had been watching the baby since 2:30 p.m. Sept. 30, when Autumn Grissom, the baby’s mother, went to work. He first told police he became angry when the baby was crying and picked her up quickly and might have shaken her a little, according to the charging documents.

The next day, he told police the baby had fallen out of a stroller and that he had held her above a chair and dropped her into it. The baby fell onto the floor, the documents said.

Around 9 p.m., the baby started crying nonstop, and Hendley didn’t want to call 911 because he knew he had done something wrong, the documents said.

In another interview this week, Hendley told police he got frustrated with the baby’s crying and shook her. When she didn’t stop crying, he threw her across the room into a chair. The baby fell out of the chair and onto the floor, and then he knew she wasn’t breathing properly, the report said.

At 11:30 p.m., Grissom returned home from work and took the baby to the hospital. Hendley didn’t go with her.

Doctors found bruising on the baby’s right arm and leg, significant brain injury, significant retinal bleeding and retinal detachment and she was having constant seizures, according to the probable cause affidavit from the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Braelyn’s heart and valves were donated to two other infants, according to Michelle Ingle of Orleans, the baby’s grandmother. “With her having the traumatic brain injuries ... the only organ they were able to use was her heart,” Ingle said. Grissom wants to meet the babies who received Braelyn’s organs, Ingle said.

Hendley, 5700 U.S. 31 South, Franklin, remains in the Johnson County jail on $46,000 bond. He will go in front of a judge within the next week to hear his new charges, and a pretrial conference will be set within the next few months, Cooper said.

Dad charged with 2nd-degree murder in smothering death of 5-month-old daughter (Baltimore, Maryland)

Dad is identified as JEFFERY MCKINNEY. Note that the mother apparently lives in Virginia, suggesting this is a custody/visitation case. Sounds like Daddy neglected to contact authorities for a long time, if the body had already passed the stage of rigor mortis.

Baltimore man accused of smothering 5-month-old daughter

Jeffery McKinney, 23, charged with second-degree murder, child abuse

UPDATED 5:26 PM EDT Oct 05, 2015

BALTIMORE —A 23-year-old Baltimore man has been charged in the death of his 5-month-old daughter, city police said.

Police said officers responded at 5 p.m. Saturday to a home in the 6400 block of Sefton Avenue for a report of an unresponsive infant. The 5-month-old child was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital for treatment.

Police said medical staff discovered that the infant had passed the stage of rigor mortis, and 5-month-old Noran Lee Torbet was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Family members of the child were questioned and detectives centered on the child's father, identified as Jeffery McKinney, as a person of interest.

Police said McKinney confessed that he became frustrated when the infant would not stop crying. He placed a pillow on top of the baby to muffle the sound of her cries, police said.

"This was no accident. This was absolutely no accident. The suspect confessed to us there were several pillows placed over top of the baby's body to get it from crying," Baltimore police Director T.J. Smith said.

After realizing that his daughter was unresponsive, police said, McKinney put the baby on the edge of the mattress against the bedroom wall and piled pillows on top of her.

Police said McKinney went downstairs and asked family members if they had seen the infant. Once they found the child, the infant’s grandmother immediately began CPR while waiting for the ambulance to arrive.

"You talk about an absolute tragedy. This is not an exciting announcement that a murderer is off the street, it's a 5-month-old who's dead as a result. There's a mother who doesn't have the child, there's a grandmother who doesn't have her granddaughter any longer as a result of these actions," Smith said.

Neighbors said the family kept to themselves. They said Sefton Avenue is a street with many young families.

"I couldn't imagine that happening to my daughter. A child's innocent, really. Can't do too much to people. It's sad when anybody gets harmed, but what could a child do to you to kill them?" said Neil Armstrong, who has a 9-month-old daughter.

A neighbor who did not want to be identified said she saw McKinney last week with his baby daughter.

"The baby was crying in the stroller down here, but when he walked back here, he talked to my husband and I. We were out with our dogs, he was holding the baby and loving the baby and said his girlfriend was in Virginia," the neighbor said.

McKinney was arrested and charged with second-degree murder, assault and child abuse.

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police arrested 30-year-old Joseph Swidorsky Thursday. He’s charged with criminal homicide and endangering the welfare of children, in the death of his five-week-old daughter, Braelyn.

According to the criminal complaint, West View Police were called to Swidorsky’s home on June 15, 2015, for the report of an unresponsive child. Swidorsky told police he was bathing his daughter and that she was crying so hard that she stopped breathing.

The mother told police, she had asked Swidorsky to bathe Braelyn and she returned to the bathroom to find the infant unresponsive and turning blue.

The baby was taken to UPMC Children’s Hospital, where she later died.

An autopsy revealed the child died of blunt force trauma to the head – specifically a subdural hematoma and a fractured skull.

A witness told police that during a conversation with Swidorsky while at the hospital, he gave four different versions of what might have happened to baby Braelyn. None of which were consistent with her cause of death.

Another witness reported overhearing Swidorsky say, “Braelyn is a psycho baby and does nothing but cry all the time.”

Bail was denied for Swidorsky. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 16.

Her family said the baby suffered a skull fracture after her father threw her up against the wall because she wouldn’t stop crying.

The Franklin Police Department said the incident happened Thursday afternoon.

They arrested and charged the girl’s father, 20-year-old Christopher Potts, with battery resulting in death.

He is currently in the Johnson County Jail with bond set at $30,000.00. Felicity’s grandmother, Danielle Anderson, said investigators told her Potts tried to give the child CPR and a bottle after throwing her against the wall.

“He couldn’t handle her crying during nap time. That’s why he hurt her,” said Felicity’s grandmother, Danielle Anderson.

Felicity’s mother, 18-year-old Annabelle Anderson, declined to comment.

Oklahoma Father Accused Of Shaking Baby To Blindness Will Stand Trial
Posted: Aug 26, 2015 6:54 PM EST Updated: Aug 26, 2015 7:53 PM EST
Lori Fullbright, News On 6

TULSA, Oklahoma - A Tulsa man must stand trial for child abuse after prosecutors say he shook his 4-month-old daughter so hard, she’s now blind.

A detective and a doctor testified against Cornelius Shanklin on Wednesday, and the judge ruled there's enough evidence for him to go to trial.

About a dozen members of the baby’s family showed up to support the case in court and they all wore matching T-shirts that say “Justice for MaAliyah."

MaAliyah's family members filled two rows inside the courtroom as they listened to the testimony of a child crisis detective and a pediatrician who specializes in abuse cases.

MaAliyah's mother, Mandy, waited outside the courtroom doors, ready to testify if needed against her husband.

The detective says Shanklin told police he was watching his daughter and toddler son the night MaAliyah was injured, and he could tell she had a skull fracture and didn't look right and wouldn't stop crying.

He told police he was upstairs and thought maybe she rolled off her pillow and hit her head or their son did something to her.

A pediatrician says MaAliyah did have a skull fracture in the back of her head, bleeding in her brain and both her retinas were detached.

She testified someone would have to violently shake a baby and hit her head on something to cause those injuries.

She testified a toddler isn't strong enough or coordinated enough to shake a baby that hard, and even if a toddler dropped the baby, it would only cause bruising, not those injuries.

She also testified the baby could not at that age roll over or crawl, so couldn't cause the injuries herself.

She told the judge MaAliyah likely will be blind the rest of her life.

"She's innocent,” the pediatrician said. “She couldn't protect herself."

As it turned out, MaAliyah's mother was not called to testify, and she was relieved to learn the judge ordered her husband to stand trial.

In addition to the child abuse charge, a charge of child neglect also was added.

Prosecutors argued Shanklin did not get medical help for MaAliyah in a timely manner.

Toddler dies years after being assaulted by dad, who was a "caretaker" with a criminal history of assault (St. Louis, Missouri)

Generally, fathers with a history of criminal assault are not great candidates for child caregivers.

We desperately need other options so mothers can stay in school.

Toddler dies years after he was violently shaken by father at St. Louis home

August 21, 2015 2:15 am • By Joel Currier

ST. LOUIS • A young boy severely abused as an infant by his father several years ago has died of his injuries, authorities said.

Karon J. Little, who was 3 months old in December 2011 when he was vigorously shaken in his home, died about 9 a.m. Tuesday at Children’s Hospital in St. Louis.

Police have said the boy’s father, Rufus Little, shook Karon while caring for him Dec. 15, 2011, at the family’s home in the 4400 block of St. Louis Avenue.

Paramedics were sent to the home about 7:20 p.m. that day and found Karon without a pulse and not breathing, court records say. Two other children, who were 2 and 5 years old at the time, were also under Little’s care.

Little told police that he had been watching the three children at the home while his wife, who was Karon’s mother, was at school. Little told police that when he grew frustrated with the two older children, Karon began crying, and he picked up Karon and shook him “violently” until he stopped.

Little told police he then put Karon in his crib, checked on him an hour later and found him unresponsive. Karon suffered severe brain injuries and was reported in critical condition.

Little was charged that month with first-degree assault and abuse of a child.

After a five-day trial that ended Nov. 1, 2013, a jury found the boy’s father guilty of second-degree assault and child abuse. In January 2014, Little was sentenced to seven years in prison. Little, now 52, is serving that sentence at the Algoa Correctional Center in Jefferson City.

Susan Ryan, a spokeswoman for St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, said prosecutors are reviewing the case “and exploring what legal options we have.”

The child had been in state custody since the abuse, but it was not clear where he received medical care, authorities said.

Little’s appeal on the assault and abuse convictions is pending, court records say. His public defender, Amy Lowe, declined to comment Thursday until she could get permission from Little.

Court records say that in addition to child abuse, Little’s criminal history includes drug and assault convictions in Virginia.

D.C. father admits to squeezing 5-week-old son to death
WUSA9

WASHINGTON -- The D.C. man arrested for the Aug. 4 death of a five-week-old infant admitted he would squeeze the child to get him to stop crying, reports CBS affiliate WUSA.

Robert Smith Sr. of Northwest, D.C. was charged with first degree felony murder in connection with the death of five-week-old Robert Smith Jr. of Northwest, D.C., police said.

Smith admitted in court that when the child would become fussy, he would squeeze the child to stop him from crying, reports the station. He reportedly did this throughout the infant's short life. According to court documents, Smith called himself a "monster" and says no one else, including the baby's mother, knew what he was doing.

According to reports, officers responded to the D.C. house where the infant was found for a death investigation on the afternoon of Aug. 4th. According to the station, the officers found a man performing CPR on an infant child when they arrived on scene.

The baby was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, reports the affiliate. The cause of death was determined to be multiple blunt force injuries in the manner of homicide, police said.

According to the station, police had previously stated that there was nothing suspicious about the infant's death.

Dad pleads guilty to aggravated abuse of infant; little boy, now 4, left blind (Memphis, Tennessee)

How did dad managed to shake this baby "nearly every day" without detection? Appears that either dad was either a deadbeat "caretaker" while mom worked, or this was a custody/visitation situation.

At any rate, once again we have a "frustrated" dad with no nurturing abilities who couldn't cope with normal infantile crying. Not just once (the "snap" scenario), but multiple times.

Father pleads guilty to aggravated child abuse

The father of a four-year-old boy who is blind was sentenced to 13.5 years in prison after pleading guilty to aggravated child abuse.

41-year-old Steven Grayson entered the guilty plea after testifying that he routinely shook the boy as an infant in an effort to stop him from crying.

The child was taken to the hospital in December of 2010 with “shaken baby syndrome.”

He is now blind as a result of suffering bilateral retinal hemorrhages and bilateral subdural hemorrhages to the brain, according to testimony from Le Bonheur pediatrician Dr. Karen Lakin.

Sgt. Jim Byars with the Memphis Police Department testified that Grayson admitted shaking the baby nearly every day for several weeks in late 2010.

Grayson's sentence will be served without the possibility for parole.

Dad on trial for murder of 8-month-old son (Columbus, Georgia)

A very typical pattern. Mom has to work, so deadbeat daddy appointed to be the caretaker. Moron can't take ordinary infantile crying, so he bashes the baby. Then he can't even bother to get medical help. That becomes the traumatized mother's job. Happens again and again....

Murder trial: Jury deliberating father's fate in death of 8-month-old

By TIM CHITWOOD
July 23, 2015

A jury of seven men and five women Friday will resume deliberating the murder case against Shane Eric Hinkson after attorneys made their closing arguments Thursday about the death of Hinkson’s 8-month-old son in January 2012.

Jurors began deliberating at 2:45 p.m. Thursday and stopped at 5 p.m., though they spent part of that time reviewing a video recording of Hinkson’s interview with police the New Year’s Day his then-fiance rushed their child to St. Francis Hospital with a severe head injury. The boy named Alexander Cabanayan died at a pediatric trauma center in Atlanta on Jan. 6, 2012.

Attorneys presented the jury with two competing scenarios in their closings:

The defense claimed that if Hinkson injured his son, he did so purely by accident, and may have only exacerbated an existing ailment the child sustained elsewhere.

The prosecution maintained the evidence that Hinkson deliberately threw the child down in a fit of anger was clear, as was his failure to seek immediate medical care when he discovered the baby was hurt.

“If only the defendant had called 911,” prosecutor William Hocutt IV told jurors. Instead Hinkson called the baby’s mother, Jennifer Cabanayan, who was working at Peachtree Mall, and told her “something bad had happened” and she needed to come to his Antietam Drive apartment.

She did not have a car, and had to have a coworker drive her there. Testimony showed Hinkson called her at 1:55 p.m. and she got to the hospital an hour later. If “every second matters” in a medical emergency, then think how many Hinkson wasted, Hocutt said: “The defendant delayed hundreds if not thousands of seconds.”

Defense attorney David Wolfe said what happened to the baby was nothing more than an accident that led to criminal charges. “You’ve heard the expression ‘you can indict a ham sandwich.’ The real expression is, ‘you can indict a ham sandwich for killing the pig,’” Wolfe told jurors, later adding, “There is nothing ‘grand’ about a ‘grand jury.’ I want you to know that.”

Wolfe said prosecutors were alleging Hinkson grabbed the baby under the chin and slammed him onto a bed: “That’s their theory now. That’s the thing they’re going to try to prove to you.”

The attorney said he had two children he used to throw up in the air and catch, and toss onto a bed. He looks at Hinkson and thinks, “There but for the grace of God go I,” he said.

He reiterated his theory that the infant would have survived had he got adequate emergency care at a level-1 trauma center — which Columbus does not have — but doctors at St. Francis Hospital failed to maintain the baby’s oxygen flow, accelerating his rapid decline.

He told jurors they had to find Hinkson not guilty if this resulted from an accident, and “that is precisely what we have here.”

Said Hocutt: “This was no accident. He intended to hurt that child.” Hinkson was angry because his fiancé went out with friends on New Year’s Eve and left him with the child, who wouldn’t stop crying as the parents overnight exchanged 79 heated text messages.

“He was stewing and stewing and stewing,” Hocutt said. “He picked that baby up right here and slammed him on the bed…. He kept doing it until that baby shut up, because he was tired of that baby crying.”

He referred to remarks Hinkson made later to police. Then an Army sergeant, Hinkson had returned from service in Iraq about a year earlier, and he was finding it hard to sleep and to control his temper.

In his recorded interview with police, he made remarks such as, “I got angry,” “I just lost it,” and “Sometimes I can’t control myself,” Hocutt noted, asking jurors, “Does that sound like an accident?” Of Wolfe’s claiming emergency room staff failed to maintain the baby’s oxygen flow, Hocutt countered that testing during the child’s treatment showed no drop in his oxygen levels.

The prosecutor noted also that three doctors testified the child died of abusive head injury, and even a physician testifying for the defense agreed that slamming a baby down on a bed could cause such trauma.

The jury must render a verdict on each of the five counts Hinkson’s charged with: malice or intentional murder; felony murder for allegedly killing the baby while committing aggravated assault; felony murder for allegedly killing the child while committing first-degree child cruelty; aggravated assault; and first-degree child cruelty.

The jury is to resume deliberating the case at 9 a.m. in Judge Frank Jordan Jr.’s Government Center court.

Michigan father gets prison in 3-month-old son's death

ALLEGAN, Mich. (AP) - A southwestern Michigan father who pleaded no contest to manslaughter and first-degree child abuse in the death of his 3-month-old son has been sentenced to prison.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1JsxTgn ) 22-year-old Jonathan Colby learned his punishment Monday. Allegan County Circuit Court Judge Margaret Bakker gave him 18¾ to 30 years, saying "that it actually happened is beyond my comprehension."

Defense attorney Robert Champion says his client "has taken full responsibility." A no contest plea isn't an admission of guilt but is treated as such for sentencing.

Jase Colby was found unresponsive in December at an Allegan Township home about 30 miles south-southwest of Grand Rapids. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Police have said Jonathan Colby told investigators the boy was struck because he was crying.

"Caretaker" dad causes "devastating" brain bleed in 3-month-old son, charged with 1st-degree assault (Portland, Oregon)

Fathers rights folks and gender neutral feminists like you to think that "primary caregiver" dads are just as good as moms, if not better. The evidence does not bear this out.

Very often, these men are short-tempered, abusive personalities who can not/will not hold a full-time job. Notice that dad AWES SHEIKHUNA appear to provide all the daytime caregiving while his girlfriend, who, interestingly enough, declines to live with him, works full time. As too often happens, Daddy gets "frustrated" by the emotional demands of infant caregiving, and disaster ensues.

The baby's injuries are described as life threatening....

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Just hours before a 3-month old boy was rushed to the hospital with “devastating” injuries, a pediatrician described the boy as alert and happy, police said.

Awes Sheikhuna, 28, was arrested shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday at Portland Police Bureau’s East Precinct after he turned himself in. He was booked into Multnomah County Detention Center a short time later.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office Multi-Disciplinary Child Abuse Team filed charges of first-degree assault and first-degree criminal mistreatment against Sheikhuna.

According to an arrest affidavit written by Portland Police Detective Erica Hurley, paramedics were called to an apartment complex in the 6700 block of Southwest 26th Avenue on June 15 when Sheikhuna called 911 after his three-month-old son became unresponsive.

Boy’s injuries described as ‘devastating’

The child remains at Doernbecher Children’s Hospital at Oregon Health & Science University “with significant brain injuries,” Hurley wrote. According to child abuse specialist, the boy’s injuries were diagnosed as “non-accidental trauma.” Dr. Tom Valvano told police the boy has “devastating” brain injuries and that he may die as a result of them.

“Dr. Valvano stated if (the boy) survived the brain injury that he would likely be permanently disabled,” Hurley wrote.

When doctors examined the boy at OHSU, they discovered he had “multiple bleeds to his brain and a spinal injury,” according to documents.

The injured boy has a brother, police said. Sheikhuna told police the boys’ mother is his girlfriend and they have been dating for 2 years, according to court documents. The girlfriend told police while they are not legally married, they are married “in the eyes of God,” Hurley wrote. Sheikhuna and his girlfriend reportedly do not live together.

The mother told police Sheikhuna comes over to her apartment to watch his sons while she works. On the day of the alleged assault, Sheikhuna arrived to watch the children and take them to the doctor’s office. She left the apartment around 2 p.m. on June 15, police said. Sheikhuna told police he made the appointment because both children reportedly had the flu, Hurley wrote. Sheikhuna reportedly told police that the children had been sick for “1-2 weeks”.

Boy described as ‘alert, happy’ by doctor

Sheikhuna and the children went to the doctor’s office around 3:30 p.m June 15, police said. The pediatrician noted the alleged victim “was alert, happy and easily consoled,” Hurley wrote. The doctor reported that the boy did not cry. “The physical exam was remarkable only for nasal congestion,” Hurley wrote regarding the doctor’s exam.

Shortly before 4 p.m. Sheikhuna returned to the apartment, police said. He called the mother of the children and told her “the doctor said nothing was wrong (with the boy),” Hurley wrote. But Sheikhuna reportedly claimed that the boy would not stop crying.

The boy’s mother got another call from Sheikhuna while she was at work, police said. Sheikhuna “told her something was wrong (with the boy),” Hurley wrote.

Sheikhuna told police while in the apartment, the boy continued to cry, court documents state. When police asked Sheikhuna about his actions, he told them he was “carrying (the boy) around and stroking his head to try to get (the boy) to stop crying but it didn’t work,” Hurley wrote. Sheikhuna reportedly said he gave the child liquid ibuprofen and some other liquid medication he purchased at a local market that “supposedly treats stomach ailments.”

Father ‘afraid’ when calling 911, doesn’t perform CPR

Sheikhuna told police to get his son to stop crying, he put the boy in a swing inside the living room, court documents state. He reportedly went to check on the boy after noticing the boy “got quiet”. Sheikhuna said the boy sounded like he was choking, so he then put water on him to get the boy to breath. At that point, he called 911 and was told by an emergency dispatcher to start performing first aid. Records show the 911 call was placed at 6:11 p.m. on June 15.

Sheikhuna “was afraid he would hurt (the boy) so he did not do CPR,” Hurley wrote. #Detectives Hurley and Nathan Tobey, both assigned to the Multnomah County Child Abuse Team, interviewed Sheikhuna at OHSU. Homicide Detective Erik Kammerer assisted, given the nature of the child’s life-threatening injuries. The interview was translated by Portland Police Officer Khalid Ibrahim who speaks Somali, court documents state.

Sheikhuna told the detectives and officer he didn’t do anything before the child started becoming symptomatic. He admitted there were no falls or accidents before the child was injured, court documents state. #“Sheikhuna said he does not know what caused (the boy’s) injuries,” Hurley wrote.

He told the investigators he was the only person supervising the children in the afternoon when the injuries occurred, court documents state. Sheikhuna told the detectives and officer he was not frustrated by the crying of the two boys.

Detectives have seized Sheikhuna and his girlfriend’s cellphones as part of the investigation. They have obtained warrants to analyze the phones, court documents show.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Friday at the Multnomah County Justice Center. His bail has been set at $255,000.

TEMPE, AZ (KPHO/KTVK) - A teenage father was arrested in Tempe on Tuesday after his 2-week-old son suffered injuries consistent with shaken baby syndrome, a court document stated

Anthony Estrada, 19, and Savionne Schartzbauer arrived at Banner Desert Hospital on Memorial Day with their infant, who suffered several bruises and abrasions and was unresponsive.

The baby was intubated to assist him with his breathing.

The couple said their child was “acting weird” prior to their arrival but their statement was vague, according to a probable cause statement.

They said their baby had hit his head on a table in the home while the infant's diaper was changed, court paperwork stated.

Schartzbauer said he left the infant in the care of Estrada for about 20 minutes while she went to buy some bandages, the document said.

When she returned she said her son's eyes were swollen shut.

A medical social worker at the hospital told officers that the baby had bruises and abrasions on his left cheek, a scratch on his lower left arm, an abrasion on his left upper thigh and three small cuts on his right hand.

When officers questioned Estrada he admitted to “losing control of his son,” court paperwork stated.

He said his son hit his head on a wooden table. Estrada admitted to biting his son's right hand and said he felt “frustrated while carrying his son, when the child was crying.”

During a separate interview, Estrada admitted to holding his son and that the baby fell on a couch, rolled and hit a board which was in the frame of a couch, police said. But a doctor told officers the fall doesn't match the infant's significant brain injury.

On Tuesday, the arresting officer spoke with the doctor again who said the baby was suffering from traumatic injuries to all four quadrants of his brain. The boy's injuries were not allowing proper blood flow to the brain.

The infant required two blood transfusions.

White Bear Lake infant nearly died from dad's abuse, charges say

One-month-old’s father caused “devastating and permanent” injuries, says the criminal complaint.

By Chao Xiong Star Tribune

May 22, 2015 — 9:35pm

A White Bear Lake man abused his 1-month-old son so badly that the baby nearly died, according to charges filed Friday.

Austin T. Whiteaker, 19, was charged in Ramsey County District Court with first-degree assault and malicious punishment of a child.

“Dr. Mark Hudson of Midwest Children’s Resource Center, a child abuse pediatrician, reported that [the baby’s] injuries are consistent with the legal definition of ‘Great Bodily Harm’ in that the child actually died and was revived and will have permanent disabilities as a result of the inflicted trauma,” the charges said.

The baby suffered a “devastating brain injury,” bleeding around the brain, hemorrhages in the left eye, multiple fractures and extensive bruising. The charges did not specify what types of disabilities the baby will likely suffer.

According to the complaint: Police were called to Whiteaker’s apartment in the 3900 block of Hoffman Road about 6:40 p.m. on April 26 because the baby was not breathing. Whiteaker and the child’s mother, 20, were home at the time. The couple’s roommate, 20, was also home and performing CPR on the child.

“The baby was blue in color, was not breathing and did not have a pulse,” the complaint said. “There was blood coming out of the baby’s right nostril.”

The baby was taken to St. John’s Hospital, where he was revived, before he was taken to Children’s Hospital.

All three adults told police that the women had gone to McDonald’s to buy food, leaving the baby alone with Whiteaker. The baby was blue and unresponsive when the women returned. #Doctors spoke to Whiteaker and the baby’s mother, and learned that on April 25, Whiteaker awoke about 6 a.m. to the baby crying. The baby’s mother was asleep. About 30 minutes later, they saw a large bruise on the baby’s head, and he vomited twice.

Whiteaker told doctors that the baby cried “24/7,” and didn’t sleep well until about 9 a.m. April 26.

Doctors founds several injuries to the baby, including bruising that was consistent with a human handprint, the complaint said.

Whiteaker allegedly gave “vastly inconsistent accounts” of his son’s injuries in four interviews with police and child protection authorities. The charges allege that he said nothing happened and that he left his son alone for a few minutes to use the bathroom and returned to find him blue; that the baby fell off the foot rest of a recliner; that he tripped over the baby while it was in an infant seat, and that the baby fell 2 feet from a baby carrier.

Ramsey County juvenile court records show that there are no child protection cases filed in Minnesota for either Whiteaker or the baby’s mother.

Dad arraigned on murder charge for kicking 4-month-old baby to death (Bakersfield, California)

Reports: Father shook, kicked 4-month-old who later died

Stepfon Jones is arraigned on a murder charge in the death of a 4-month-old child.

BY JASON KOTOWSKI The Bakersfield Californian

The father of a 4-month-old who died last month shook and kicked the baby because he was angry he wouldn't stop crying, according to court filings.

Stepfon Jones Sr. is charged with first-degree murder in connection with the baby's death and has been held without bail since his arrest April 26. The coroner's office has said the death of his son, Stepfon Jones Jr., was a result of blunt force trauma and is a homicide.

Police responded to an apartment at 9:23 p.m. April 25 in the 1900 block of California Avenue for a report of a baby not breathing. They found Jones' girlfriend, who is also the baby's mother, performing CPR on the boy.

The baby was taken to Mercy Hospital and pronounced dead an hour later.

Investigators questioned the girlfriend about a bruise they noticed on the child's forehead, according to police reports recently filed in court. The girlfriend said she accidentally struck the boy's head on a support pole while taking him out of his crib.

Her statements didn't match the boy's injuries and, upon further questioning, the girlfriend said 20-year-old Stepfon Jones Sr. assaulted the child.

The reports say she told investigators Jones was angry over the boy's crying. He picked the baby up and "violently shook him," she told police.

She said Jones smacked the boy's head against his crib swing and threw him to the ground. He then kicked the child, according to her statements to investigators.

The girlfriend said the baby stopped crying and became lethargic. He eventually stopped breathing, and she called 911.

In May of last year, Jones pleaded no contest to battery and causing pain, suffering or injury to an elder or dependent adult. Court records say he was sentenced to 40 days in jail and three years' probation.

Jones is next scheduled to appear in court May 15.
