Babysitting druggie dad to serve 10 years for severely abusing 4-month-old daughter (Montville, Connecticut)

Once again, it's not a random "man" that abused this baby. It was a D.D.D. (Deadbeat Druggie Daddy). Yet another loser--with a criminal record no less--who was recruited into infant care because Mom had to work. This time the daddy is identified as JEFFREY MEARS.

Lord, do we need decent maternity leaves in this country. And we sure need to force @$$holes like Mears into jobs where they are not likely to do any real damage. But how much you want to bet that no self-respecting employer would hire his @$$? So naturally, we use guys like this as infant caretakers instead.

A Montville father was sentenced to 10 years in prison this morning for inflicting severe injuries on his 4-month-old daughter.

Jeffrey Mears, 30, had been watching the baby while the mother, Jaime Carr, was at work. Carr took the child to the pediatrician, where doctors noticed she had multiple bruises and a broken left arm. A follow-up exam at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center showed that she had injuries "consistent with multiple episodes of inflicted injury," including a healing fracture of the clavicle, healing fractures in both arms, multiple healing and fractured ribs, healing fractures to both legs and a probable skull fracture. State police arrested both parents and the state Department of Children and Families took the child into custody.

Mears has an extensive criminal record and was himself a victim of child abuse, according to court documents and testimony.

Interviewed during the investigation, Mears denied hurting the baby intentionally but told police that his judgment was clouded by the marijuana and alcohol he uses constantly. He said he had fallen with her in his arms once. He told state police he was "generally rough" with her, that he "bobbles her around a lot."

In December, he pleaded no contest to first-degree assault. Carr's case is pending, and her next court date is March 25. Mears will be on probation for five years following his release from prison.
