SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- City police believe a man critically injured his 1-year-old daughter at their home on Wednesday. Kyle Baylor, 24, of Springfield is charged with child abuse.

Police went to 920 E. Adams St. shortly after noon Wednesday after an emergency call about a child who had fallen off a couch. Police and medical responders found the child unresponsive. She's now in a hospital in critical condition.

During the early stages of the preliminary investigation, police became suspicious of the father’s statements. They believe the child's injuries are inconsistent with falling off a couch.

The child’s mother was not at the home at the time the injuries were received. One other young child was in the home at the time but is unharmed.

A judge set Baylor's bond at $250,000.
