PORT ORCHARD, Wash. -- A 20-year-old Bremerton man was arrested after his 3-month-old daughter died Sunday from brain injuries suffered as a result of shaken baby syndrome, according to the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the baby had been left with the suspect, who was staying as a guest on Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor, on Friday while the baby's mother attended an event in Seattle.

The suspect told detectives he became frustrated over his child's crying, so he shook her and hit her in the forehead until she became unresponsive, according to the Sheriff's Office. He also reportedly said he tripped while walking to the couch and dropped the baby, who hit the ground very hard.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the suspect spent the next 90 minutes trying to "make it look like nothing happened" until he finally asked a neighbor for help.

A social worker at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital called the Sheriff's Office Saturday because she and doctors believed the child had sustained its injuries due to abuse.

According to the Sheriff's Office, the baby died Sunday from brain injuries, injuries an investigation determined were the result of shaken baby syndrome.

The suspect was arrested and booked into Kitsap County Jail.
