A father accused of crushing his infant daughter’s skull was convicted Monday of child abuse after reaching an agreement with prosecutors.

Robert Schmidt, 22, faces three years in prison after he pleaded guilty in La Crosse County Circuit Court to a reduced charge of physical abuse of a child and obstructing officers. Prosecutors agreed not to make a specific recommendation when he is sentenced on Feb. 20.

The 8-week-old girl was brought to a La Crosse emergency room July 14, 2013, with a fractured skull and bleeding brain.

Schmidt, who lived then in Coon Valley, told a social worker the baby hit her head when she rolled over in her bassinet. He later told investigators she hit her head on a table when he got out of bed before claiming he hit her by accident with his elbow when he rolled over in bed.

Schmidt pleaded guilty in March to abusing the child, but a judge later allowed him to withdraw his plea because he wasn’t given enough information about lesser charges that could be available to a jury.
