A Central Florida baby girl was in a coma with bleeding in her brain Friday — injuries Apopka police say were caused by ongoing abuse at the hands of her father.
Police and paramedics received a call Thursday afternoon about a 1-year-old girl who was not breathing and had no signs of a pulse.
When rescuers arrived, the baby's 23-year-old father, Rony Veus, was performing CPR. Rescuers transported the baby to a local hospital, where staff told Apopka police they suspected child abuse.
According to Apopka police, Veus told authorities he has thoughts of harming his daughter and feels relieved when he causes her pain or discomfort.
Veus said he has pulled her hair, pushed her to the ground, thrown her on the bed, burned her with a cigar and forced her to eat cinnamon.
State child-welfare workers were called and are ensuring the safety of the baby, whose condition is listed as "guarded."
Apopka police arrested Veus on a count of aggravated battery. He remained at the Orange County Jail on Friday.
