An Oxford man is accused of hitting his infant son in the head, injuring the child.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, 21-year-old David W. Doornink was at home with his infant son Nov. 25, 2012, while the boy’s mother was at work. Police said that while Doornink was alone with the boy, he hit the child in the head with his open hand.
The boy’s mother observed bruising on the child’s head, but Doornink denied hitting him, police said.
The next day, the boy’s mother sent photos of the bruise to one of the boy’s grandparents. The grandparent then reported the injury to the Department of Human Services.
Police said the boy’s mother confronted Doornink again before a DHS worker and deputy sheriff arrived at their home. This time, Doornink admitted that he hit the boy, but said he had been attempting to swat a fly and missed, according to police.
The DHS worker and sheriff’s deputy had the boy transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics where an examination revealed a hand-shaped bruise and a hemorrhagic contusion on the boy’s brain.
Police said Doornink admitted to hitting the boy in a subsequent interview.
Doornink has been arrested and faces one count of child endangerment causing bodily injury, a class D felony. He remains in custody at the Johnson County Jail on a $7,500 cash-only bond.
