Stay-at-home dad pleads no contest in death of 3-month-old son (Oakland, California)

Wow. Dad FERNANDO LOUGHLIN faces a possible 4 whole years in prison for killing his 3-month-old son. Daddy was allowed to plea down from a murder charge to involuntary manslaughter. And get this. The judge is considering letting that slide down to 2 years! How 'bout we just make him say he's sorry and send him home with no dinner?

By contrast, check this out. A mom in Ohio just got 5 years in prison for her heinous crimes. What did she do, you ask? Why that uppity b**ch enrolled her daughters in a suburban school district, so they could get a decent education, that's what. Moms from the projects aren't supposed to do that! They're supposed to know their place, and that is creating a bigger surplus labor force for the underclass so we can help keep American wages low. But what about equal opportunity and all children deserve an equal chance at an education? That's so 20th century, dude. We're in the era of the plutocracy now. Just like in the Roman days of yore, patriarchs can kill their children as they see fit. But don't none of you b*****s be getting any fancy notions about getting ahead in the world, now!

Oakland dad pleads no contest in death of infant

The father of a 3-month-old Oakland boy who died after suffering brain and organ injuries pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter Wednesday, two days after the start of his murder trial.

Fernando Loughlin, 36, faces up to four years in state prison for killing his son, Julian Loughlin. However, Judge Gloria Rhynes of Alameda County Superior Court has signaled that she is considering a two-year sentence, Deputy District Attorney Tim Wellman said.

Loughlin had initially said he had put Julian down for a nap, awakened and found him not breathing, Wellman said. When confronted with evidence Julian had suffered head trauma, Loughlin said he had accidentally dropped his son in a bathtub, the prosecutor said.

Authorities believe Loughlin intentionally injured his son but don't know why, Wellman said.

Loughlin's attorney, Bill Locke, said, "Our position was that the injuries he suffered were consistent both with inflicted trauma and accidental trauma, and medical science could not tell what happened."

Prosecutors agreed to a plea deal because of the conflicting medical evidence and because Loughlin has no previous criminal history, Wellman said.

Oakland police were called to an apartment at 3300 Kempton Ave. near Interstate 580 and Oakland Avenue on March 3, 2007, after someone reported an infant there in distress. Julian was taken by ambulance to Children's Hospital Oakland with severe injuries, police said. The boy was removed from life support five days later.

Loughlin, who is married and has another young son, quit his job as director of sales at the East Bay Express newspaper in 2005 in part to spend time with his family, friends have said.

"While this in no way can make up for the loss of an innocent life, it does ensure that there will be some measure of justice achieved and the defendant will forever be responsible under the law for killing a child," Wellman said.
