A man with a history of domestic violence admitted in Ramsey County court this morning that he violently shook his 7-month-old son when the baby wouldn't stop crying.
The boy's brain has shrunk and he will have permanent brain damage, according to doctors' reports.
Robert Junior Williams, 36, pleaded guilty to felony malicious punishment of a child. He faces a prison sentence of more than three years when Judge Salvador Rosas sentences him April 1.
The Jan. 10, 2010, incident occurred at the St. Paul apartment of the child's mother, where Williams had been staying for about two months, he said.
He admitted the following under questioning by attorneys:
The baby's mother was out grocery shopping with a friend while he took a nap. Williams said he was just getting out of the shower when she returned from the store.
The boy began to cry. Williams took him from his mother while she went to fetch the rest of the groceries from the car. Williams said he could not console the baby.
"I was just frustrated about him crying and whatever," Williams said. "He started having a seizure and I didn't know what was going on."
Williams is being held at the Ramsey County jail.
The boy and his mother now live in Montana. Williams' parental rights have been terminated.
Last year, Williams pleaded guilty to gross misdemeanor domestic assault. He was sentenced to 90 days.
