A 21-year-old man slammed his 1-year-old daughter on the ground in a "fit of rage" and tried to bite officers who responded to the 911 call in the Logan Square neighborhood Sunday night.
The child is in critical condition at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago. She has a fractured skull.
Neighbors in the 2800 block of North Spaulding Avenue called police around 10:50 p.m. to report an argument.
Police arrived and found the man had punched the child's mother and slammed the baby to the ground by her feet, according to police.
The man was believed to be high on amphetamines, police said. The man tried to bite responding officers, who hit him with an "open hand" and arrested him.
He was taken to a hospital for self-inflicted wounds but has since been discharged to the custody of Chicago police, authorities said.
The mother did not require hospitalization, police said. It's not clear how old she is.
