A father made his first appearance before a judge after being arrested for allegedly burning his 4-month-old son.
According to arrest papers obtained by 11 News, the infant suffered severe burns on nearly 10 percent of his body. Father Skyler Hamilton faces felony child abuse charges.
Jail records show that Hamilton, 23, is an active duty soldier out of Fort Carson. This is the first time he's been in trouble with the law.
Detectives say they were first tipped off to the alleged child abuse by Memorial Hospital, who reported Monday that they were treating a 4-month-old for second-degree burns.
Hamilton was arrested several hours later.
According to the arrest affidavit, Hamilton admitted to holding his son under hot running water for two minutes--to the point where the baby's skin started to peel. Police say Hamilton and his son were alone at the time of the incident.
Doctors say the 4-month-old also showed signs of small ruptured veins from hard crying.
The child has been flown to the Children's Hospital in Denver for further treatment.
Hamilton is being held at the El Paso County Criminal Justice Center on a $25,000 bond.
