A Hendersonville man has been charged with felony child abuse after a 10-month-old girl left in his care was found with severe injuries.
Investigators with the Henderson County Sheriff's Office have charged Michael Laviell Thompson, 24, with one count of felony child abuse, intentionally inflicting serious bodily injury, according to a news release.
Thompson surrendered to authorities at the Henderson County Detention Facility at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.
The investigation began at about 11:30 p.m. Friday, when an officer was conducting a traffic stop and a vehicle approached and stopped in the roadway. The officer could hear a female screaming inside the vehicle about an infant being hurt and needing an ambulance.
The infant's mother said she had gone to pick up food and received a call from Thompson indicating the infant had fallen and hit her head, the release says.
The officer immediately called EMS respond because the injuries looked to be severe, the release says. The infant was taken to Mission Hospital and remains in critical but stable condition.
Thompson, the infant's father, remains in the Henderson County Detention Facility under $80,000 secured bond.
