BALASORE: A man tried to kill his two-year-old daughter under the influence of alcohol by drowning her in a big ditch.

Manoranjan Jena (35) of Bhadrak's Gabharpur village was arrested by Bont police and produced in court on Monday. Only recently, a man in Cuttack had burnt his two children with a hot electric iron. Police said Jena was caught by villagers on Sunday afternoon while drowning his daughter. He was then handed over to police and subsequently arrested.

"Jena came home drunk and started quarrelling with his wife and father. All of a sudden he picked up his daughter and started running out of the house. Neighbours who followed him were taken aback when they saw him drowning the child. They rescued her and informed police," inspector-in-charge (Bont) Puspalata Barik said.

The child was immediately rushed to the local hospital. Her condition is normal and she has been discharged. Shyamsundar Jena, father of the accused, lodged a written complaint with the police alleging the inhuman activities of his son.

"Manoranjan used to ask his wife for money and beat her up on refusal. He spoilt the atmosphere of the house. He crossed all limits when he tried to kill his daughter in an inebriated state," the FIR read.
