SOUTH BEND — A 32-year-old South Bend man was arrested early Tuesday after allegedly threatening and assaulting his girlfriend with a handgun in front of their infant child, police said.
South Bend police were dispatched to the couple’s home, in the 2600 block of Bow Court, about 6 a.m. after a neighbor reported hearing a woman begging for her life.
Upon arrival, officers knocked on the door and were met by the 24-year-old victim, who was reportedly wrapped in a towel and holding her 6-month-old child.
The woman, bloodied, told police she was sleeping about 3 a.m. when her boyfriend, the child’s father, returned home and began hitting her in the head with a handgun, accusing her of cheating. She said he continued to assault her for several hours in front of the child, at times putting the gun in her mouth and threatening to pull the trigger.
Police searched the home and found blood in several spots, including the foyer, bathroom, bedroom, and on the child’s pajamas. No weapon was found.
The boyfriend was arrested on suspicion of domestic violence and felony battery.
