SAN ANTONIO -- A 24-year-old father has been arrested after police say his newborn was seriously injured while under his care.

Police said the infant's mother noticed her 2-month-old girl was crying more than usual when she returned home to check on the infant and the infant's father during her lunch break on Monday. It was her first day back to work since taking maternity leave.

The baby was still upset when she returned home from work around 5 p.m., so the mother took the infant to Children's Methodist Hospital.

Doctors told police the baby had multiple broken bones, bruising to the back, legs and face. The emergency staff immediately recognized signs of child abuse and notified authorities.

The infant's father was arrested charged with intentional injury to a child.

The suspect said he claims that the injuries occurred as result of an accident.

Police said the child was last reported in stable but serious condition and is receiving around the clock attention.
