A Bridgewater man is now facing more serious charges in the beating death of his 1-year-old son.
Ian Gulbin, 31, was indicted by a grand jury Thursday on charges of second-degree murder, as well as first-degree and second-degree manslaughter, on allegations that he "slammed" his son, Brayden, against a hard object inside their home at 531 Doe Road on Nov. 18.
Gulbin is due to be arraigned Monday in Oneida County Court.
Gulbin was initially charged with manslaughter last year after Oneida County sheriff's investigators concluded that he had allegedly left the severely injured boy in a bedroom instead of calling 911.
Responding paramedics had been first told that Brayden fell from his crib, but the boy's fractured skull, bruising and internal injuries suggested something far worse had occurred, investigators said.
Because there was no evidence that Gulbin had intentionally meant to kill his son, Gulbin was not charged with murder at the time.
But after prosecutors further reviewed the homicide, they determined that a murder charge dealing solely with young victims was appropriate.
While showing "depraved indifference to human life," the murder charges accuses Gulbin of "recklessly engaging in conduct which creates a grave risk of serious physical injury or death" to a child less than 11 years old, according to the law.
