Dad accused of assaulting 4-month-old son (Thurston County, Washington)

What does it mean when they say the baby was "in the care of" the father at the time he was injured? Was Daddy custodial? Was this during his parenting/visitation time? Was he a stay-at-home daddy? Was he watching the baby while Mom was running an errand? What?

Regardless, once again we see a short-tempered father who couldn't handle the routines of infant care. Dad is identified as COLLIN PAINTER.

Thurston County sheriff's detectives arrested a 28-year-old father Thursday on suspicion of assaulting his 4-month-old baby boy at a residence on Bamberg Lane SE earlier this week.

Detectives began an investigation Thursday after doctors at Mary Bridge Children's Hospital in Tacoma notified law enforcement that an infant in their care from Thurston County had injuries consistent with being shaken, Thurston County Sheriff's Sgt. Ray Brady said.

The baby suffered a subdural hematoma and "would have permanent damage to his brain as a result of his injuries," court papers state.

Detectives learned that the baby was in the care of his 28-year-old father at the time he was injured on Tuesday, Brady said.

Doctors told detectives that the child's father's story of how the baby was injured was inconsistent with his head injuries, Brady added.

Detectives arrested the father, Collin Painter, on suspicion of first-degree assault of a child. Painter was being held at the Thurston County Jail Friday after a judge set his bail at $100,000.
