Cops: Father crashes car on purpose with child inside
Ripon police say man took girl, mother jumped into car
UPDATED 5:18 PM PDT Oct 02, 2012
RIPON, Calif. (KCRA) — A mother was able to buckle her child’s seat belt just moments before the driver of the car -- the child's father -- drove into a utility pole on purpose, Ripon police said.
The 4-year-old girl and her mother were in a car driven by David Allen Goulet, 24, that crashed near the Salida Exit in Stanislaus County on Monday afternoon.
Ripon police said that Goulet and the girl’s mother were involved in a domestic dispute prior to the crash.
During the argument, Goulet took the child and told the woman that he was leaving. The mother, fearing for the child’s safety, jumped in the vehicle as he drove off.
As he was driving, police said Goulet told the woman he was going to take all of their lives. Moments later, the car crashed into a utility pole.
The child had trouble breathing due to the airbag in the vehicle being deployed, but otherwise was OK, according to police. The mother suffered minor injuries.
Goulet was booked into the San Joaquin County Jail on charges of attempted vehicular manslaughter, kidnapping, false imprisonment and child cruelty.
