Dad charged with shaking 7-week-old son (Jacksonville, Florida)

Dad TYRONE HAYES has been charged with injury to a child after allegedly shaking his 7-week-old son. The baby has severe internal injuries including a closed head trauma and multiple broken ribs. Dad says he shook the baby to stop him from crying. (Like that's what you do to stop a baby from crying...how about rocking him, feeding him, walking him?)

A Jacksonville man was charged with injury to a child, a second degree felony, Tuesday night at 8:45 pm. Tyrone Hayes, 19, was charged for allegedly shaking his seven-week-old male infant.

Travis Cearley, detective at the Jacksonville Police Department, said officers responded to East Texas Medical Center-Jacksonville in reference to a possible injury to a child case.

“The child was observed to be nonresponsive and had signs of possible physical injury,” Cearley said. “The infant was transported by helicopter to a children’s hospital in Dallas.”

Though the child’s condition hasn’t been made public yet, Cearley said hospital officials told him the infant has severe internal injuries including closed head trauma and multiple rib fractures.

Hayes was arrested after he divulged information about the incident in an interview.

“The father said to me he had shaken the child to try and get him to stop crying,” Cearley said. He also said the department has the statement on record.

He was admitted to the Jacksonville Municipal Jail, then arraigned by a judge and transported to Cherokee County Jail Thursday morning. His bond was set at $100,000.

A protective order was issued ensuring when he makes bond he has no contact with the child, Cearley said.

The child’s mother is Natisha Finch, also 19.
