Police: Father in jail after baby punched in face

A 36-year-old man is in jail after he reportedly punched his 1-year-old son in the face during a fight with his wife, police said Monday.

The incident occurred late Saturday night in the 1300 block of South Victoria, Lt. Joe Schroeder said. That’s just west of Hydraulic and south of Pawnee in south Wichita.

The man was arguing with his wife, Schroeder said, when he shook her and then hit his son in the face. The baby was transported by ambulance to Via Christi Hospital St. Joseph and later transferred to Via Christi St. Francis.

The husband was arrested a short distance away on 31st Street South shortly before 11 p.m. on Saturday, police arrest records show. He had a green substance suspected of being marijuana in his possession and fought with officers when they took him into custody.

All four children who live at the house on Victoria – including the infant and three girls ages 11, 10 and 9 – were placed in protective custody by police due to unsafe living conditions at the house, Schroeder said.

The Exploited and Missing Child Unit is investigating the case.
