Nelson County man faces felony child abuse charges

A Nelson County man faces charges related to abusing a 3-month-old child and leaving the child in critical condition.

Kalen Joseph Nielsen, 41, was arrested Friday and charged with one count of malicious wounding and one count of felony child abuse, according to Nelson County Sheriff David Brooks.

Nielsen, the child's father, was arrested in Amherst County, said Billy Mays, the investigator who is overseeing the case.

Brooks said in a news release today that the child is in critical but stable condition at University of Virginia Medical Center.

Nielsen was held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail without bond.

Mays said the investigation is ongoing and further information is not yet available.
