Dad charged with killing 4-month-old son while mom ran errands (Des Moines, Iowa)

Notice that the cowardly father, DREW JAMES WEEHLER-SMITH, took off and abandoned the baby- either as he was dying or after he was dead. Pretty sickening.

Teen dad charged in Des Moines infant's death

Des Moines police are investigating the suspicious death of a four-month-old on the city's south side, officials said.

The boy's mother found him alone and unresponsive in an apartment in the 6500 block of Chaffee Road around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, said Des Moines Police Sgt. Jason Halifax.

She had left him in her father's care while running errands, authorities said. The child's father was not in the apartment when she returned, Halifax said.

The father, Drew James Weehler-Smith, 17, was charged with the neglect of a dependent person for leaving the child alone, police said. Additional charges are possible, pending autopsy results, police said.

It's the second time in one week Des Moines police have investigated the suspicious death of an infant.

On April 15, officers responded to a home in the 3600 block of Southeast 11th Street, Halifax said. The home's occupant said she woke up and found her five-month-old child on the floor.

The baby was pronounced dead at a local hospital, police said. The case remains under investigation as detectives await complete autopsy results.
