Young dad accused of critically injuring baby

SAN ANTONIO -- A 20-year-old father has been arrested on charges of injury to a child after his 8-week-old boy was hospitalized with a fractured skull and two broken legs.

The child was taken into Methodist Children's Hospital on Thursday, Sept. 13. The boy's father, Mathew Mays, was arrested on Monday after hospital staff reported the child's injuries were consistent with physical abuse.

According to a San Antonio police arrest warrant, the child's mother told police that Mays claimed the baby had fallen off the bed. Mays then changed his story, telling the mother that he dropped the baby while preparing a bottle.

However, the infant's doctor told investigators that the injuries are more consistent with physical abuse, such as yanking or swinging, rather than a fall off the bed, according to court documents.

Mays was taken to Bexar County Jail on a $75,000 bond.

The infant was in critical condition as of Tuesday morning.
