Police: Dad left son behind while he drank, smoked pot in his canoe (Tiverton, Rhode Island)

CHRISTOPHER BUCKELY is the pot-smoking, beer guzzling, child-abandoning daddy here. Authorities handed over the boy to "relatives." Why? Isn't there a mother? If not, why don't we say so and explain why? If there is, is it too hard to acknowledge her existence?

INVISIBLE MOTHER ALERT.

TIVERTON — A Tiverton man was arrested earlier this week after allegedly abandoning his 12-year-old son to take a canoe ride under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Christopher Buckley, 50, of 825 Bulgarmarsh Road, was charged with possession of marijuana and boating while intoxicated, according to Tiverton Police spokesman Lt. Patrick Jones.

On Tuesday evening at 9:10 p.m., police received a call from residents of Forand Lane, which abuts Stafford Pond. They said a child was screaming for help and for his father. When police arrived, they found the boy, who told them he had been dropped off at the shoreline by his father approximately 45 minutes earlier. Police contacted the Rhode Island Department of Emergency Management and the Tiverton Fire Department and prepared to launch a search and rescue mission from a dock in the area.

Moments later, Officer Sakhom Uon observed Buckley paddling toward shore. Upon inspection, police located alcohol in the boat. Buckley agreed to a field sobriety test and a pair of chemical tests, both of which registered twice the legal limit, according to Jones.

Tiverton Police filed a report with the Department of Children, Youth and Families related to the potential child abandonment. The boy was turned over to relatives Tuesday evening, while Buckley was held for arraignment in Newport District Court the following morning. The case is still under investigation by Tiverton Police.
