Dad charged with murder in death of 18-month-old daughter (Wooster, Ohio)

Dad TIMOTHY R. GRESSER has been charged with murder and felonious assault in the death of his 18-month-old daughter. For all the media glorification of "stay-at-home" dads, we have really missed the boat. Too many dads are simply unemployed and either incapable and/or unwilling to take care of business on the home front. In cases like this, the children die while Mom is off at work, trying to bring home the bacon. We need to get the daddies back to work and out of "care taking." Before more kids succomb to fatal blows to the head.

WOOSTER -- A Smithville man is charged with causing the death of his 18-month-old daughter.

Timothy R. Gresser, 22, of 7934 Five Points Road, was arrested on charges of murder and felonious assault in the death of his daughter, Kali Gresser, Wayne County Sheriff Thomas G. Maurer reported Tuesday.

Kali died Sept. 30 at Akron Children's Hospital, according to the sheriff's report. She was transported there Sept. 28 from Dunlap Community Hospital in Orrville, where she was taken by squad after Gresser called 9-1-1 at 3:30 p.m. to report Kali had fallen from her crib and was injured.

Sheriff's Capt. Doug Hunter said a Dunlap physician contacted deputies after Kali's injuries were inconsistent with Gresser's version of events.

"The injuries were described as suspicious and we got involved right away," Hunter said.

Hunter said Kali suffered the fatal injuries while Gresser was at home and his wife was at work.

An autopsy by the Summit County Coroner's Office revealed signs of physical abuse and found Kali died as a result of a blow to the head, according to sheriff's reports. Gresser was interviewed by deputies Monday and admitted to "causing the damage that led to the child's death," Maurer said.

Gresser was incarcerated at the Wayne County Jail on murder and felonious assault charges.

"This case is particularly troubling because this child died not as a result of the actions of a stranger but due to the inappropriate actions of her father," Maurer said. "I am pleased that the deputies involved in this case were able to bring the person responsible for Kali's death to justice."
