Father goes to prison for raping, sexually abusing daughter

A 70-year-old Montreal man has been sentenced for sexually abusing and raping his daughter when she was just a child over 45 years ago.

When asked about the sentence, the woman, who is now 51 but can't be identified, said her sparkling eyes say it all.

"It's a great weight off my shoulders," the woman told reporters. She says she can turn the page now that her father has been sent to prison for 3 1/2 years for raping and sexually molesting her starting when she was six and continued for nearly a decade. She said she suffered from bouts of depression and attempted suicide. She said she decided to go to police three years ago because she couldn't take it anymore.

Her father, a short, frail man with grey hair and wearing a grey windbreaker and olive green sweatpants, walked unsteadily to the prisoner's box and appeared poker faced during the sentencing.

He was found guilty of incest and indecent assault back in April but has shown no remorse for the crimes.

"He did not make a defence, he did not testify in defence," his lawyer Charles Benmouyal said. He had asked for a sentence of 24-30 months.

The man put the blame on his daughter, saying she instigated the abuse. Crown prosecutor Marc-André Peloquin says the judge chose to believe the victim.

"It is impossible that a child could do that on her own," Peloquin told reporters.

The judge took into account the young age of the victim, the repeated sexual abuse, that the father abused his position of authority and sexually assaulted his daughter during a crucial period of her development.
