Father arrested on child abuse charge

PORT CHARLOTTE — A man was arrested after he allegedly admitted to striking his 2-year-old son with a leather belt.

The toddler reportedly suffered multiple bruises on his body and was treated at Peace River Regional Medical Center in Port Charlotte — where his father brought him in four days following the incident — before being released into the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families, according to the Charlotte County Sheriff’s report.

Tony L. Robertson, 29, of the 18300 block of Quadrille Avenue, in Port Charlotte, was charged with cruelty to a child. He was held without bond at the Charlotte County Jail.

Robertson first told a Charlotte County Sheriff’s investigator that his son suffered bruises while at day care, a sheriff’s report stated. Upon further questioning, Robertson admitted to striking his child four or five times with a belt after the toddler attempted to place an object into an electrical outlet, states the report.

At the hospital, the child was treated for his injuries, which included bruising on his right forearm, neck, chest and abdomen.
