Dad arrested in drug bust; kids were in car (Woodford, Virginia)

I guess you could say, um, that dad KEVIN JEROME SMITH, was teaching his young children the value of entrepreneurship and the pride of owning your own business. Unfortunately, there was just one teeny problem: dad's business was cocaine dealing. Kind of unpleasant having your kids watching on while you're busted, wouldn't you say?

A man who has already has at least eight cocaine-related convictions was busted again this week with his small children looking on.

Spotsylvania County Sheriff's spokeswoman Liz Scott said the suspect, 35-year-old Kevin Jerome Smith of Woodford, was on Marye Road Wednesday evening when Deputy Murdock Woodard stopped him for speeding.

After the suspect said he didn't have a license, a police dog was brought to the scene to check the vehicle, according to police.

Scott said the dog indicated that there were drugs inside, and Woodard found several individually wrapped bags of crack cocaine.

Smith was charged with possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute, and two counts of felony child neglect.

Smith was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond. The children, ages 5 and 6, were turned over to their mother.

According to court records, Smith pled guilty last year in Caroline Circuit Court to six counts of distributing cocaine.

He was sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison with all but six months suspended.

He also had two prior cocaine convictions in Spotsylvania.
