CALGARY -- Using his own toddler as the star in a kiddie porn video should land a Calgary dad a seven-year prison term, a prosecutor said yesterday.

Crown lawyer Jenny Rees argued the man's conduct was a gross breach of parental trust.

"These offences before the court are the most egregious form of betrayal," Rees told provincial court Judge Catherine Skene.

She said photos and a four-minute video, found on the man's cellphone by his common-law wife, included images of a book of adult pornography.

"He was showing his 23-month-old daughter the adult pornography as well," Rees said.

"This was all part of the grooming process," she said.

"This was a very young child."

The offender, who can't be named to protect his victim's identity, pleaded guilty to sexual interference, producing child pornography and possession in connection with the images.

After discovering the images last Nov. 19, the man's wife contacted police.

Defence lawyer Jim Lutz said a more appropriate sentence would be in the four-year range, taking into account his client's guilty plea, remorse and the support he has of family, including his wife. "There is an obvious view towards reconciliation of this family," said Lutz. "She's supportive of him."

The wife wrote a victim impact statement saying she would welcome the offender being involved with their two children if he seeks help for his alcohol and drug addictions.

The abuser himself also offered a teary apology.

"I just want to show everybody that I'm a good guy, a good dad and I made a terrible mistake," he said.

In the 1990s, he was sentenced to 4 1/2 years for manslaughter for the beating death of a robbery victim.

Skene will hand down a sentence on Sept. 10.
