BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Three people are behind bars and two more are in the hospital, following a fight in East Bakersfield.

The Kern County Sheriff's Office reports that on Friday, July 18, deputies were sent to the 3200 block of Kentucky Street to respond to a victim of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found both a 27-year-old man and a 13-year-old girl suffering from gunshot wounds.

The man was taken to Kern Medical Center, while the 13-year-old girl was taken to the Valley Children's Hospital, the KCSO said.

Deputies say the incident started when two people were fighting on the street when both 36-year-old Edgardo Acosta, father to the 13-year-old, and Lissette Navarro, 34, stepmother of the child, went to break up the fight. The KCSO said Acosta fired a shot from a handgun, striking his daughter and the 27-year-old man; Navarro then assaulted the man with a baseball bat.

KCSO deputies arrested Acosta, Navarro, and Lose Licea, 20, following their investigation into the incident. All suspects were booked into the Kern County Jail.

Acosta was booked for attempted murder, child endangerment and negligent discharge of a firearm. Navarro was booked for assault with a deadly weapon and child endangerment. Licea was booked for battery.
