A 3-year-old boy from Lacey died in Montana of “blunt and sharp force injuries,” according to authorities in Montana.

The child’s father, Jeremy Brent Cramer, 38, was charged with deliberate homicide in the child’s death after he was arrested Monday night, when he was found washing blood off his clothes in a southwestern Montana convenience store restroom, Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Attorney Ben Krakowka has said.

The boy has been identified at Broderick Daniel Cramer, according to the Montana Department of Justice. Broderick would have turned 4 next Tuesday.

Jeremy Cramer made an initial court appearance Tuesday in Montana and is being held in lieu of $250,000 bail. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that the boy likely died from blunt and sharp force injuries, according to the Montana Department of Justice. No further details regarding the specific cause and method of death were available Wednesday.

According to a news release from the Montana Department of Justice, additional pathology examination and criminal investigation are required. Division of Criminal Investigation agents and Anaconda-Deer Lodge law enforcement officers are working closely with the Lacey Police Department to determine the events that led up to the child’s death, according to the release. Krakowka said Wednesday that he expects to file charging documents in connection with the case by the end of the week.

Krakowka would not say whether Cramer has given investigators a statement.

Homicides are extremely rare in Deer Lodge County, Krakowka said.

“Something like this happening here is completely and totally unheard of,” he said.

The boy’s mother had told Lacey police Monday that her husband took the child from their Lacey home that morning and drove off. Lacey police put out a “be-on-the-lookout” alert for Jeremy Cramer’s vehicle for Eastern Washington, Montana and Idaho authorities after the mother notified police that a credit card in the family’s name had been used at a store in Moses Lake.

However, police did not issue an Amber Alert because there was no information from the mother suggesting that the child was in danger, Lacey Police Cmdr. Jim Mack said Tuesday.

A convenience store clerk in the Anaconda, Mont., area called police about 10:30 p.m. Monday after finding Cramer washing blood off himself in the restroom.

Investigators later found Cramer’s vehicle in a rural area near Mill Creek Road, about 5 miles southeast of Anaconda.

An initial search turned up no sign of the boy Monday night, but his body was found after the search resumed at daybreak.

Mack has said Cramer lived in Lacey about a year, and had a Montana driver’s license. Mack said police had never been called out to the home.

Mack added that the couple had been arguing about finances recently.
