Child abuse report leads to dad’s arrest

A Columbia man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of child abuse after reports that his daughter had been beaten with a belt.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department was notified by children’s services authorities around 2 p.m. yesterday about a 4-year-old girl whose mother had found bruising on the child’s leg and buttocks, Detective Tom O’Sullivan said. Deputies questioned the suspect, Jeffrey P. Turner, 47, of 4875 I-70 Drive N.W., and he made incriminating statements, O’Sullivan said. The abuse was alleged to have occurred Tuesday.

Turner was arrested on suspicion of child abuse and on a warrant for failure to appear on a charge of passing bad checks. He was released from the Boone County Jail on $4,713 bond.
