The infant miraculously survived for five days without food while her parents lay dead after the father killed the mother before committing suicide
A FIVE-WEEK-OLD baby girl was found alive next to the bodies of her parents who had been dead for about five days.
Police said the baby's father shot the mother dead before turning the gun on himself.
The couple was found dead on the floor of the shack they lived in with the baby crying on the bed next to their bodies yesterday.
"It is a miracle. She stayed in bed for five days and survived all the elements. Praise the Lord," police spokesperson Warrant Officer Molefe Mokoena said.
The baby is under observation in a Vaal hospital. Police hope the baby's relatives will claim her and take her home.
"They asked neighbours to help find relatives of the dead couple, who lived in a shack in Evaton in the Vaal.
The infant miraculously survived for five days without food while her parents lay dead after the father killed the mother before committing suicide last week.
Police and neighbours of the dead couple said they did not know how the child survived the ordeal without anyone taking care of her.
"God is great. He is the only one who knows how the little one survived. She is really a miracle," Mokoena said.
Neighbours say the couple moved into the area five months ago. Tshoaedi Pulutsoane, a neighbour, said he last saw the couple on the morning of October 24.
"Two days before I last saw them I heard the man shouting at the woman, who was crying.
"After that I did not see them again and thought they were visiting relatives," Pulutsoane said.
He said he became worried on Friday morning when a strong stench came from their shack.
"I went to check where the smell came from and noticed a lot of flies in the shack through a window.
"I knocked but did not get any response. I decided to call the police," Pulutsoane said.
Police forcibly removed corrugated iron sheets from the shack to gain entry since the door was locked with a chain.
Mokoena said what really shocked them was not the dead couple but seeing a five-week-old baby playing next to them.
"We found the child playing on the bed, alone next to her dead parents. The parents were lying in a pool of blood.
"The man still had the murder weapon in his hand," a distraught Mokoena said.
The police have opened a murder and suicide docket.
This is the third baby to survive an incident in which parents had died violently.
Ayanda Hlatswayo was six weeks old when her mother and brother were found dead in their Kriel home in 2002. The killer, Vusi Sibanyoni, was sentenced to two life terms in 2007.
Ayanda lives with her adoptive mother, Phumzile Sibanyoni
Thabiso Motebu's parents and two sisters were killed in their Middelburg home in 2005 by Johannes van Rooyen, 29, and Dumisani Makhubela, 30.
Thabiso was 2 years old at the time. The killers were each jailed to 14 life terms last year.
Thabiso now lives with his aunt, Annah Mabaso, a single mother of four.
