Mayor Barrett speaks out after defending 1-year-old, grandmother from attack (Milwaukee, Wisconsin)

UNNAMED DAD probably figured he could attack his 1-year-old daughter and her grandmother with impunity. He didn't count on Milwaukee mayor Tom Barrett coming to the rescue and proving that there are still heroes in this world who stand up for the innocent. Dad has now been arrested.

(NBC) - The mayor of Milwaukee's hand is broken, but his spirit is not.

Tom Barrett made his first public comments since he was attacked by a man near the Wisconsin State Fair Saturday.

The mayor was released from a hospital Monday after suffering a broken hand, missing teeth, and cuts on his face and head.

The 55-year-old said he was responding to a grandmother's plea for help, but the problem was not with the baby, but with the baby's father.

"When someone says call 9-1-1, you call 9-1-1," Barrett said. "It's that straight forward. That's exactly what happened here. It's only at that point where the response was so bizarre, that things took off in the wrong direction."

"But I think, and I hope, and I'm confident that the response that I got is the same response that every single citizen in this community would get, and I think that's something the citizens can be proud of," Barrett said.

"We don't want, in any way, to jeopardize that criminal case, but I think it's fair to say things got very, very ugly very, very quickly," Barrett said.

A man identified by the grandmother as the one-year-old girl's birth father has been arrested for the beating.

The district attorney could get the case Wednesday or this week.
