EVERETT, Wash. —
A Maryville man who had been charged with manslaughter in the shooting death of his 6-year-old daughter is now facing a second-degree murder charge.
Snohomish County prosecutors say 42-year-old Richard Peters told a cellmate that he pointed the handgun at his daughter, Stormy, not realizing it was loaded.
He originally told investigators the gun accidentally fired on Nov. 16 as he was cleaning it. She was hit in the face.
The Everett Herald reports investigators recreated the shooting scene and determined it could not have occurred as Peters originally said.
Peters pleaded not guilty Wednesday to the murder charge. If convicted, the 42-year-old Boeing machinist could face more than 20 years in prison.
